Story
Born with a deformed hand and an utter lack of the family's blood magic, Isabelle is despised by her cruel father. She is happy to be neglected so she can secretly pursue her illicit passion for math and science. Then, a surprising offer of an arranged royal marriage blows her life wide open and launches her and Jeane-Claude on an adventure that will take them from the Isle des Zephyrs in l'Empire Céleste to the very different Kingdom of Aragoth, where magic deals not with blood but with mirrors.

Just a book read aloud.

It’s taken me 16 chapters to figure out why I’m having such a hard time following the plot points and characters in this book,
The only way I can distinguish who’s talking is if I’m able to remember their names!
I hadn’t realized how important it was for the narrator to give unique voices to each character, especially when there are so many characters to keep track of.
With that said, if you have a better memory than I do, the story in this book is really engaging and has lots of twists and surprises.
Again, if you don’t have problems with one female voice for all women and one male voice for all men And can still keep straight who’s talking, you’ll love this book!

Story
The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around - and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old, he's been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it. Then a stunning opportunity presents itself in the person of a hero called the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors, and he has to seize his chance or lose his dream forever.

Fantastical imagery!
Reviewed: 08-18-24
Originally purchased several years ago, but my memory of it was so vivid, I genuinely thought it was a show or movie, not an audiobook!
It took several minutes relistening to it to convince myself that my memories were all in my head, and nothing I had seen externally.
For me, the book sucked me in and painted such extraordinarily vivid universe, I was very excited to rediscover it with a second listen, which I rarely do.
It would make an epic show! If it could get a Game of Thrones level budget.

Longest lead up to a story EVER
Reviewed: 06-18-24
The WHOLE BOOK is the lead up to a story. I would hope at least!
Listened to the whole thing while doing housework & a road trip but never once felt engaged or drawn in till the climax of the book where it just ends.
Bought it and the next book on sale because it was 20+ hrs and had great reviews but really didn’t do much for me.
Written well but loooong winded personal stories about the ppl making this trip with smatterings about the universe & politics they live in.
I’m praying the next book actually tells the story this WHOLE BOOK kept hinting at. Mysteries w no resolution, no answers.

This was not fantasy
Reviewed: 06-04-24
This felt like the prequel to a wildly successful fantasy story in the Witcher vein.
It is 100% the backstory of a “famous wizard” but with this being book one, we don’t know who this person is nor why his backstory is important.
At the 10 hour mark, I almost quit and tried to return the book, but out of sheer boredom listen through. It almost got interesting in the last, five hours, but didn’t really go anywhere.
I’m confused by the massive five star “brilliant“ reviews because this was just a story about a kid trying to make his way. Yes, there is a bit of “magic“ but it’s presented as science in their universe, as in, not magic just something that needs to be understood fully.
If I had spent more than five dollars on it, I absolutely would have returned it. I don’t know how it went, or why people are so crazy. Go nuts about it. It was merely background noise as I did shit around the house.

Hard to follow for me
Reviewed: 05-19-24
Loved the show so I bought the book. But the show seems to have little to do with the book. same theme but totally different story.
Maybe it’s just me, but I found it very difficult to visualize the technology, thus had a hard time understanding what was going on at times.
Also, I didn’t quite get what the “good guys” “bad guys” were trying to accomplish. It was never explained how this communication through time was discovered and/or came to be and since it did exist, how was it that there was only two organizations using it to gain money and power?? Unless I totally missed something?
I listened through till the end, but never really felt engaged or invested.

Find universe, regardless of minor problems
Reviewed: 12-15-23
There were several moments in the book when the solution to a problem seemed so epically simple, even by today’s technology standards, that it was hard to listen to the Bob’s debate grandiose ideas.
But I find the writing and narration, so witty and colorful, I enjoy the imagery. It all creates in my head.
Definitely moving onto book 3

A thousand years have passed since a dragon has been seen in the world. Science and technology have replaced magic, which has dwindled until it has become little more than an element of myth and legend. There are those who still have dragon blood flowing through their veins, distant descendants of the mighty creatures of old. These rare humans have the power to cast magic, the power to heal, and the power to craft alchemical weapons capable of starting wars...or ending them.

Keep me engaged
Reviewed: 12-13-22
The pace of these books is great. Never too much time between action, but enough to explore the universe and understand your surroundings and characters.
I really didn’t like the soul blade’s cocky attitude. WHY would someone choose to bond with a personality like that for LIFE, made no sense to me.
A bit adolescent at times but I thought the story, adventure and universe were compelling enough for me to put this on and listen more often than a lot of my other books.

At least one dragon remains, and military scientists from the Cofah Empire are experimenting with its blood, using the magical substance to power deadly new weapons that could be used to bring the world to its knees. That's a concern for Zirkander, Cas, and the rest of the Iskandians, but all Tolemek wants is to find his missing sister.

Being invested in the characters after listening to the first three, I enjoyed the continuation of the story.
The whole series is slightly ‘tweenie’, as in it reads like of like it was meant for a younger audience, but I didn’t mind it.
The reader doesn’t do male voices very well but good enough for me to know who was talking.

Audio BAD

I genuinely don’t understand how this could be produced and released to the public sounding like this.
It’s like out of phase speakers, echoey, and like you’re listening through a tube.
I don’t mind accents at all, but with the sound quality being so poor, it was nearly impossible to understand what anyone was saying.
