Lead character too much
Reviewed: 07-07-23
The story was ok until one main character became unrealistic. I just don’t see police waiting for a civilian to signal them to do anything. It felt like macho posturing that served no purpose. I don’t want to say too much incase someone still wants to read it, but the characters and their situation were enough without this scene where someone has to “save the day”. It just made the Mc seem dumb.

Story
When Laura Fry returns to her childhood home to care for her invalid mother, she hopes the writer’s block that has swallowed her writing career will disappear. She doesn’t plan on turning into a “yard girl” but her mother’s long neglected lawn beckons her to return it to the lush and colorful display it had been before her mother’s accident. She also doesn’t plan on making friends with the “nympho lesbian” next door but she finds it impossible not to watch the parade of playmates the neighbor brings to her pool.

Story
Susanne Wolff isn't thrilled when her mother sends her all the way across the country to Freiburg to save her uncle's stationery store from bankruptcy. Freiburg is too provincial for her taste, and besides, pen and paper are outdated anyway. Anja Lamm, Paper Love's only full-time employee, takes an instant dislike to the arrogant, digital-loving snob who's supposed to be her temporary boss. But thanks to a meddling cat, a business trip to a stationery fair, and an armada of origami boats, Anja soon starts to see beneath Susanne's aloof exterior.

This one is interesting but a little slow. I liked it, but it is good to know going in. It is a true to life romance I would say. Not everyone has huge obstacles to overcome in a relationship which is fine. So it isn’t my favorite book by any means but it was a nice sweet story.

Story
L.A.-based journalist Megan Hill is a true town mouse. She loves her permanent cell signal, her shitty public transport, and her Starbucks on every corner - and all of that is about to disappear for an entire summer. Soon, she's going to regret suggesting a "town vs. city" article for the next magazine issue, as it's her the magazine is sending to Iron Road, Utah to make the report. Out there, she'll find Jessie North, the confident and cantankerous owner of North Star Books in the small western town - and apparently the only out and proud lesbian for miles around.

Novella?

So this didn’t feel like a novella or short story, it just felt choppy and incomplete.

Story
At the Medio School for Girls, distinguished young women are trained for one of two roles in their polarized society. Depending on her specialization, a graduate will one day run a husband’s household or raise his children. Both paths promise a life of comfort and luxury, far from the frequent political uprisings of the lower class. Daniela Vargas is the school’s top student, but her pedigree is a lie. She must keep the truth hidden or be sent back to the fringes of society. And school couldn’t prepare her for the difficult choices she must make after graduation.

I would love to have more backstory for some characters and more time could have been spent on details of the world they live in but I really enjoyed it.

Story
Workaholic Erin Ryder was on the fast track to self-destruction. Reeling after her lover walked out on her, she turned to booze and caffeine to make it through each day. After a family intervention, she finds herself on a remote ranch in New Mexico - on womyn’s land - to detox and heal. No cell service, no internet - she’s convinced she won’t last three days, much less for the three-month sentence her father has mandated.

Bad back story
Reviewed: 08-25-21
I don’t like the way the back story of one main character was treated in the story. She was dealing with past trauma and felt a lot of guilt over something that was absolutely not her fault. As a matter of fact, she was a victim in this situation but it was never described that way in the book. She was manipulated by someone who had his own issues, but I feel like that is never recognized. I couldn’t really like the book much after that even though the rest of the story is fine.

It was hard to get into because the romance happened after almost zero contact between the two. It was hard to believe or be invested in the relationship.
