Story
Everyone who makes the journey faces an impossible choice. Hundreds of thousands of people who arrive every year at the US-Mexico border travel far from their homes. For years, the majority came from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, but many more have begun their journey much farther away. Some flee persecution, others crime or hunger. They may have already been deported, but the United States remains their only hope for safety and prosperity. They will take their chances.

Interesting Historical

Good job portraying and sharing the history of Central America. Liked the narrative of various peoples stories. Slightly disjointed at the end and with the change in readers on Audible I was really lost. Good material we should all be more familiar with, and bringing that forward was valuable.

Story
Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

Enlightening

Loved that this book brought the women of Vietnam to my attention. Having grown up during the Vietnam era,
albeit being very young (and having had relatives go, etc), I thought I knew some of the story. I did not. This book brought forth the voices of the women who were there, voluntarily, to do what they could to save lives oftentimes in the very worst of conditions. Kudos for a well constructed story that shed light on the role of women in Vietnam. We need to remember the voices of all who served during that time.
