Exhausting
Reviewed: 02-24-25
I am on chapter 27 and I am powering through a book about a hellaciously BORING woman having an affair with a childish man. The BEST thing about this book is its historical notes. For example, I had no idea about the Harlem Hellfighters! I find myself taking people or the events the author mentions in this well researched book and going on side quests to investigate their lives or adventures. Now, that’s satisfying.

Story
For months I stood in the wings, an understudy waiting for my time to shine. I never imagined he would be in the audience that night. Canon Holt. Famous film director. Talented. Fine. Before I could catch my breath, everything changed. I went from backstage Broadway to center stage Hollywood. From being unknown, to my name, Neevah Saint, on everyone's lips when Canon casts me in a star-studded Harlem Renaissance biopic. But stars shine brightest in the dead of night. Forbidden attraction, scandal and circumstances beyond my control jeopardize my dream.

I have devoured every book and they’re all fantastic. The main character Cleopatra Fox is INSUFFERABLE, childish, naive, and self righteous. I stick around because I love Harry, Harmony, Peter, Goliath, and the rest of the crew.

Surrounded by partygoers with painted faces, pirates, priests and enough feathers to drown an ostrich, Eleanor searches for a familiar face. As she follows a familiar pair of long legs up a grand staircase, she’s sure she’s on Lance’s trail.

Extraordinarily Boring

I am always up for a cozy British murder mystery but getting through this book (as well as the first) has felt like working a job I don’t care for. The narrator is fantastic and the elements of the story are there but they haven’t been properly blended.

Maybe it was the Shenanigans gift certificate that put her over the edge.
