Story
Here is the first full-scale biography of Wallis Simpson to be written by a woman, exploring the mind of one of the most glamorous and reviled figures of the 20th century, a character who figured prominently in the blockbuster film The King’s Speech. This is the story of the American divorcée notorious for allegedly seducing a British king off his throne.

After a very slow and tedious first introduction to the life of Wallace I was captured by her intensity and the way she was able to manipulate so many people with out ever finding the peace and acceptance she was seeking.

An important story which almost got lost in the repetitive emotional declarations of the main character and the woman he loved the only way he could, intermittently.
She behaved in a similar fashion which became distracting

Suspenseful story
Reviewed: 11-11-18
I recommended this book when I was about halfway finished but I'm not as enthusiastic now.
The repetition and detail do add to the suspense but sometimes slow the story to a crawl.
I never want to hear the word "kids" again.
If the ending is leading to a sequel I don't think I will read it.

I almost gave up after the first few chapters but felt obligated to read it because it was a book club choice and we always read the books.
Then I was captured as I became involved in the lives and history portrayed.
There were times I felt I could breathe their air and others when I held my breath.

The back-and-forth telling of the story was confusing.
I found myself having to re-read sections and heard the same thing from a friend.
All in all it was very interesting.

Story
Wallace Stegner's uniquely American classic centers on Lyman Ward, a noted historian who relates a fictionalized biography of his pioneer grandparents at a time when he has become estranged from his own family. Through a combination of research, memory, and exaggeration, Ward voices ideas concerning the relationship between history and the present, art and life, parents and children, and husbands and wives.
