How does it keep getting better?
Reviewed: 02-06-25
There's obviously some formula and predictability involved with literature of this nature but somehow Mayberry evolves and introduces new characters that I care about and raises the game to another level. And Porter was born to do Ledger.

These stories are mostly longer and benefit from the room to build plot and characters. The narrator of the entire series is really perfect for the material. Every story I've heard makes me want more.

Between 1925-27, H.P. Lovecraft wrote Supernatural Horror in Literature, an extended essay about about the history of the weird tale. In it he describes supernatural horror from its earliest manifestations up to the 1920s. Lovecraft offers his own candid opinions on the merits (and deficiencies) of the world's canon of strange literature. The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society recorded the essay as an audiobook. Read by society founders Sean Branney and Andrew Leman, the recording is approximately three hours long.

Story
Steeplejack Joe Clark climbed his first factory chimney when he was four years old. Steeplejacking had been in his family for five generations. Not much frightened him. Certainly not stone. So when Joe is offered the lucrative job of repairing the weathercock and stonework on one of Muncaster Cathedral’s spires, he can’t believe his good fortune. But from the moment he saw the medieval gargoyle - lichen colored and hollowed-eyed - he felt uneasy, as if he were being watched. But he wasn’t going to let a few superstitious fears get in the way of his job.

This is his legendary first collection, carefully corrected by the author for this new edition. The title story won both the World Fantasy Award and the British Fantasy Award in 1982, the first time a single work received both major awards. Contents include 16 groundbreaking stories and an introduction by Ramsey Campbell.

At the height of an unnamed war, a soldier is confined for striking an officer. Referred to as George Smith in official papers and records, the prisoner comes under the observation of Army psychiatrist Philip Outerbridge, who asks the young man to put his story down on paper. The result is a shocking tale of abuse, violence, and twisted love, a personal history as dark and troubling as any the doctor has ever encountered. Believing the patient to be dangerously psychotic, Dr. Outerbridge must dig deeper into his psyche.

When a mysterious cult horror movie from the 1970s pops up on YouTube, Ben simply has to see it. He has to see it, partly because it’s a horror film, but mostly because it stars Margot Kidder. Ben asks his girlfriend Lena to watch it with him. She does. Driveshaft, however, is no ordinary film, and before they know it, Ben and Lena are trapped within its murky and disturbing world.
