I considered not finishing this one. I’ll put my qualms in bullet points.
-Characters were not described very thoroughly and there were several minor characters that became jumbled or confused throughout the book
-The setting would change rapidly with absolutely no introduction or information. All of a sudden they’re on a patio. Where is this patio? Are they home now? Is it the end of the day? Who’s to say.
-There were major threads that were just left hanging and ignored altogether. You would get a strand of a clue, and then for the rest of the book they would 100% ignore this clue. It happened multiple times.
-The emotions of the characters felt repetitive. The characters altogether were repetitive. They would react the same way to everything the whole time.
-The pacing of the book was unique and had room to be exciting. But it felt like the climax was at the middle of the book and the whole last half was oddly disjointed tedium weirdly summarized in the last 10 minutes.
I have more questions than I have answers at this point. Idk. Read it if you want.

Story
On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

Story
Continuing where Thus Spoke Zarathustra left off, Nietzsche's controversial work Beyond Good and Evil is one of the most influential philosophical texts of the 19th century and one of the most controversial works of ideology ever written. Attacking the notion of morality as nothing more than institutionalised weakness, Nietzsche criticises past philosophers for their unquestioning acceptance of moral precepts. Nietzsche tried to formulate what he called "the philosophy of the future".

I finished this book out of spite.
This reads exactly like incel Reddit posts. Man thinks “herd mentality” is a plague, but later laments his lack of friends. Man thinks all women are inherently stupid and corrupt, but later says femininity is in danger and must be protected. Man regrets German nationalism, but later says that they should probably keep Jews out just to be safe.
What a quack. Zero stars. Only read for spite fuel.

Story
The Bhagavad Gita, "The Song of the Lord", is the best known of all the Indian scriptures, and Easwaran's reliable and accessible version has consistently been the best-selling translation. Easwaran's introduction places the Gita in its historical setting and brings out the universality and timelessness of its teachings. Chapter introductions give clear explanations of key concepts in that chapter.

I read this book because I wanted to learn more about yoga and its cultural importance. This particular translation was very helpful to me as it split up the story with instructional prefaces. It tied together many western ideas that I was already familiar with so the “new” concepts would make more sense. I’ll still probably have to read it a few more times before I fully absorb everything, but I think it was great!

I think this is a solid 4 star book for me. The plot has good elements and is surprising. However, the build-up was like 3/4 of the book. Just the same back and forth back and forth for hours, and then the peak then is revealed extremely quickly, I think. I thought about not finishing this because it was the same thing for 6 hours, but I wanted to get to the bottom of it!!!!! I did, but not without annoyance.

Story
Our brains do their best to help us out, but every so often they can be real assholes - having meltdowns, getting addicted to things, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. Your brain knows it's not good to do these things, but it can't help it sometimes - especially if it's obsessing about trauma it can't overcome. That's where this life-changing book comes in. With humor, patience, science, and lots of good-ole swearing, Dr. Faith explains what's going on in your skull, and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately....

Good, with flaws
Reviewed: 01-05-22
This book was a helpful start to unpacking some stuff, in my opinion. However:
-Production was kind of super not great and was sometimes distracting
-The whole brand of this book being curse-y at times felt forced, and also stepped into bad AAVE, which felt weird
-The chapter on what to eat went way off base, claiming that wheat products are GMO and that causes dietary problems so to eat corn instead (GMO wheat is not commercially available in the US and almost all corn in the US is GM). Kind of a weird thing to nitpick at, I know, but it very much made me question the accuracy of the rest of the claims in the book.
So: fine, but not my favorite.

Story
As the 1960s drew to a close, the United States was coming apart at the seams. From August 1969 to August 1970, the nation witnessed 9,000 protests and 84 acts of arson or bombings at schools across the country. It was the year of the My Lai massacre investigation, the Cambodia invasion, Woodstock, and the Moratorium to End the War. The American death toll in Vietnam was approaching 50,000, and the ascendant counterculture was challenging nearly every aspect of American society.

Interesting, but also a bit confusing
Reviewed: 10-28-21
I enjoyed this book and learned a lot. Both it’s strength and weakness is that it’s written from so many points of view. As a collection of stories from many people, it’s very effective in explaining different movements and capturing the culture of the time. However it was a bit hard to keep track of who was “talking” while listening to this book. I’m not sure that there would be a good fix for this, but just be aware of that going in. Each essay starts off with who wrote it and it will make more sense if you remember who is who.
