This installment was as good as the first. I adore how well done everything is, from the perfect voice castings to the musical choices used . The writing of the story is a perfect blend of seeing things coming, but still throwing the reader twists. Audible has truly hit gold with this series.

Really enjoyed this story. The characters are witty & relatable, & the narration is strong but pleasant. It’s a light & fun listen/read that brings mystery, humor, & realistic relationships of living in a small town, into a new type of ghost story.

Story
Centuries ago, the followers of the new gods defeated the old gods, and the folk of legend were banished from the world. With their departure, magic faded from the land. However, the Milesian Accords provided for a new challenge, and its time rapidly approaches. The descendant of the druid who participated in the original challenge, Liam Knox, must forge the sword for the Champion to wield, and write the next set of Accords. Time is running out, though, and the minions of the new gods will stop at nothing to ensure he fails in his tasks.

Disappointment compared to the first book.
Reviewed: 01-10-23
I don’t know how many ppl/authors need to here this, but bitchy, selfish, & obstinate women are not what equals a strong female character. Despite really enjoying the first book, this one was really hard to finish. I absolutely hate how they have depicted the female characters. Let me say it again, being selfish does not equal showing strength! When u throw in details like the female lead’s very deliberate withholding of the knowledge of a child, especially after the father expressed always wanting to be a father, & knowing they missed out on most the childhood of their first child, I have actual disgust for this character. There’s also behaviors like her jealousy of the male lead possibly being with someone, all while she sleeps with someone else for years. Then u have the female supporting character, & all I’m gonna say is no means no. I don’t care if it’s a male or female saying no, respect that shit! Her seduction tactics were over the top, but mildly humorous in the first book. In this one, she’s depicted as just not listening to others stated boundaries. I’m just really not impressed & haven’t figured out if I feel like giving the third installment is worth it.

I’m Krystin Blackwood, and I’ve only ever been good at one thing: killing demons of Darkness. But at 24, I’m about to face my toughest challenge yet: shifting from working alone to joining a team of three other Hunters. Newbie Hunters. They don’t know their magik, they barely know their place in the world, and when they find out the secrets I’ve been carrying, they’ll definitely decide it’s safer if they don’t know me.

So much idiocy
Reviewed: 07-30-22
I’ll start with the pros. I like the world building & the originality of the beings… with that said, so hard to finish this series due to the idiocy of the characters alone. Besides the hierarchy of the circles makes little to no sense, my big problem with the story is the complete stupidity of the characters. Oh, the leader is making bad calls, let’s still follow. Oh, the rage has me so super pumped I can kill the bad guy, let’s just stop because the three ur old is crying. It’s a constant borage of, not so much plot holes, but the most asinine plot directions die to mid storytelling.
If ur looking for something different & passable, sure, read it. If ur looking for something good, u probably want to spend a little more time looking.

This story has good parts & bad pets, but they work out to give a pretty decent story. It’s slightly weird when the skull stats are narrated, but u do get use to it. The quest fight seem a bit long to me, but then I remember how long they can take when gaming & it puts it into perspective. While I enjoyed the story, I don’t think that someone who isn’t a gamer, or has at least gamed, would be able to follow this tale.

Story
The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm - that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict. Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon.

Absolutely disgusting

Between the revolting descriptions of decomposition & mutilation, & the unnecessary wordiness of fight scenes, ur left with an impression that the author used this writing as an excuse to described ever depraved & offensive act they had racing in their mind. Necrophilia, rape, murder, theft, mixed with a large dose of pestilence & corruption of the church.

Appreciated the unique world building. I love when I come across stories that aren’t just new characters added to a familiar setting / plot. The magics, histories, & even the evils of this story weren’t typical. Seriously glad that I wasn’t predicting every twist & turn of the story.

Grown men fear us, and no one knows we’re coming until it’s too late to run. Irena and I - we’re good. The best. In a dog-eat-dragon kind of world, we have to be. But someone betrayed us. I can’t finish the story. This lead character is supposed to be strong, smart, & intuitive, but instead comes across stubborn, with a warped case of Stockholm syndrome toward her boss lady, & a lack of development. The author is entirely too repetitive with the leads caginess, to the point that she’s had the exact same standoffish interaction with every character she’s encountered, but it’s chapter 26 & u still have no idea where the heck the story is supposed to be going. Wholly unimpressed & it’s not in me to continue.

The story tries to hard. The love happens unnaturally quick & with a lack of any substance. Most the “mystery” comes from a ridiculously convenient naivety, that just left me, as a reader, confused.
