As a teacher, a wife, and a mother, Anna Atticus Stone craves peace. But being a warlock champion means protecting the kingdom. It also means watching over her unruly daughter, Thia, who's fallen for a boy. A boy who happens to dabble in—of all things—necromancy. When that boy—and a deadly figure from Anna's past—involves Thia in an illegal warlock tournament, Anna must consider dusting off her dueling skills. But not all is as it seems, and when Anna discovers Thia has been cursed, she finds herself in an epic battle for her daughter's soul.

Very Doom & Gloom
Reviewed: 10-13-24
I thoroughly enjoyed the first several books and thought they were well written and a very enjoyable storyline. While I understand not every book nor every book in a series is lollipops and candy canes this book was too far down the path of doom and gloom, Anna never getting a break, her life falling apart, children dying, and more importantly we lost 30 years of her life where there could have been some really interesting stories. Several times I was ready to put this down simply because it was so depressing. I would probably read a fourth installment just because of how much I enjoyed the first two but if it follows the same theme as this and I would not listen long.

Less than three months have passed since Captain Charlotte Omandi and the crew of Earth’s first starship, the TSS Bladerunner, narrowly prevented an extinction-level event from wiping out humanity. Omandi knows Earth remains on borrowed time, until she meets with leaders of the Galactic Confederation to convince them that our planet no longer represents a threat. As she and her crew prepare to become the first humans to travel outside our solar system, a string of assassination attempts lead them to an unlikely mystery.

First of all, I have not read a complete series this good or listened to a series this good as far back as I can remember. Absolute kudos to both the author and narrator. Nick Podehl (narrator) is easily my favorite narrator and his ability to make you believe in each of the characters as individuals with their own personalities, their own voice, is simply beyond compare. The author's ability through writing to elicit such emotion in the reader is also second to none. I listened to the Sentinels of Creation and thoroughly enjoyed the series. this one to my amazement, was better but both very worthy.

Story
In 2004, Doctor Damien Howard's 131st birthday celebration took an unexpected turn. His personal SETI project detected an extraterrestrial signal directed at Earth. Unfortunately, Dr. Howard's long-hoped-for communication contained a message of dire warning rather than greeting. In 1945, humanity had become a species of galactic interest and was given 100 years to address the issue.

as a general rule I read fantasy, haven't read Sci-Fi of any sort of ages read years. I did however read the sentinel series and thoroughly enjoyed it. And I am a huge fan of Nick Podehl. Both of those going for this series so I took a chance on it. From the very beginning I was hooked with the characters, the plot, the writing, the narrating, and completely caught up in the emotion of the situations. I can't recommend this series enough and I've only read the first book.
