A timely read, when light and magic are so needed
Revisado: 01-12-17
Would you listen to Mystic and Rider again? Why?
Yes! The reader is fantastic, and creates each of the characters in distinct and endearing ways----I found when I read the book as well, I could hear Jennifer Van Dyck's voice speaking from the page for each of the characters. I went on to devour the rest of the series, and would enjoy listening to the story that introduces the characters and plot that develops through the 5 books in the series.
What did you like best about this story?
I loved the characters, and felt drawn into the cares and concerns, passions and idionsyncracies of Senneth and Cammon, Kira and Donnal, Tayse and Justin. I found the struggle between light and dark, mystical powers and oppressive forces compelling at this time, fall of 2016.
What about Jennifer Van Dyck and Sharon Shinn ’s performance did you like?
I liked their ability to create believable male characters with their female voices. I liked the expressiveness and passion of the women, and what drew the skeptical Riders to come to respect and trust them. The voice of the young Cammon is full of curiosity and wonderment, despite all he has lost in his young life.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
She Who Carries the Flame, He Who Carries the Sword

Historia
In 1915, Sherlock Holmes is retired and quietly engaged in the study of honeybees in Sussex when a young woman literally stumbles onto him on the Sussex Downs. Fifteen years old, gawky, egotistical, and recently orphaned, the young Mary Russell displays an intellect to impress even Sherlock Holmes. Under his reluctant tutelage, this very modern, twentieth-century woman proves a deft protégée and a fitting partner for the Victorian detective.

Spellbinding----I'm hooked!
Revisado: 01-12-17
What did you love best about The Beekeeper's Apprentice, or On the Segregation of the Queen?
I love the character of Mary Russell, and the fresh perspective the author brings to the beloved characters of Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Watson, and Mrs. Hudson. The analogy with the Queen Bee in the hive developed beautifully through the story, as we wonder who on earth this powerful adversary could be. I found Jenny Sterlin's voice and swift transition from character to character, male and female, educated and not, compelling.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked a story with female protagonists, and a detective story so complex I had no idea how it would resolve to the end----hence stayed up listening very late two nights in a row!
Have you listened to any of Jenny Sterlin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I haven't listened to her performances before, but would definitely be drawn to anything else she reads based on her skillful work with this book.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Sherlock meets his match
Any additional comments?
As I said, I'm hooked, and intend to listen to all the Mary Russell series that's available, and will explore the rest of Laurie King's prolific work.

Historia
Lynn Schooler had recently lost a dear friend and was feeling his marriage slipping away from him when he set out on a daring journey - first by boat, then on foot - into the Alaskan wilderness to clear his head. His solo expedition, recounted in Walking Home, is filled with the awe and danger of being on one's own in the wild, being battered by the elements and even, for two harrowing days, becoming the terrified quarry of a grizzly bear. But the formidable, lonely landscape is also rich with human stories....

Confronting and healing Self in Wilderness
Revisado: 06-19-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Yes, I found the narrator's voice nasal and a challenge to listen to, though he pronounces Tlingit and French names well---I would not choose to listen to another book he narrates.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Fascinating to learn about the history of this region of southern Alaska, and the tumultuous, extreme weather around Mt. Fairweather. Least interested in the author's dissolving marriage.
How could the performance have been better?
I wonder if the author reading his story would have been more engaging? It may be just my ear, but did not enjoy the author's voice/intonation or lack thereof.
Did Walking Home inspire you to do anything?
Yes, reminded me of how life changing it was to do Outward Bound as a high school senior, and the importance of visionquesting or pilgrimages at significant transition times in my life and many I know and respect.
Any additional comments?
As one who lives in the Pacific Northwest along the Cascadia earthquake line, I was fascinated by the description of the earthquakes in this region in 1936 and 1958, really appreciated the author's historical and geological knowledge and storytelling.
