Story
Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

Both interesting and amusing

Scalzi manages to create an interesting world where humans and aliens coexist with occasional minor conflicts. He uses this to poke fun at bureaucracy and people's attitudes toward beings different than themselves. In doing so he managed to make me laugh a lot. I hope this is popular enough to prompt another visit to this world and these characters because I'd love to read more.

Inheriting your uncle's supervillain business is more complicated than you might think. Particularly when you discover who's running the place. Charlie's life is going nowhere fast. A divorced substitute teacher living with his cat in a house his siblings want to sell, all he wants is to open a pub downtown, if only the bank will approve his loan. Then his long-lost uncle Jake dies and leaves his supervillain business (complete with island volcano lair) to Charlie. But becoming a supervillain isn't all giant laser death rays and lava pits.

Non-stop enjoyment

After careful thought, I've rated this book as a 5 because of the eagerness with which I anticipated it and the sheer joy it brought me while listening to it. The narration by Wil Wheaton enhanced the experience the way his performances always seem to do. Starter Villain is filled with Scalzi's characteristic humor, entertaining plotting, and a fair amount of topics to contemplate once the book is finished. In the end, I rated it this way because I'm still smiling having finished it while eagerly awaiting his next book.

Story
Keith Stewart, a retiring and ingenious engineer, could not have been happier in his little house in the shabby London suburb of Ealing. There he invented the mini-motor, the six-volt generator, and the tiny Congreve clock. Then a chain of events sweeps him into deep waters and leads him to his happiest discovery yet.

My favorite book!

Being an engineer, I think I was predisposed to liking this book. It's a fascinating study of how an engineer is presented with seemingly insurmountable problems and overcomes them by determination and skill. Shute never wrote a book that wasn't completely engrossing and this, his last book, is no exception.

The Warm and Witty Side of Attila the Hun is a collection of historical anecdotes; odd, humourous facts; and things you will never forget, once you know them. They are the product of a life devoted to history.

Filled with little known fascinating historical facts. A few I'd heard before but most are new to me. Very good narrator on this one.
