It helped me to feel not alone
Reviewed: 07-14-19
I randomly picked up this book when it was already seven months after a breakup from a bad and destructive relationship. At some point I realized that I was still having a strong reaction to that person despite all of the mental work that I'd done. I realized that I was addicted and decided to explore what psychologists have to say about it. I don't care about the explanation that addiction to a person comes from the attachment hunger, from some history of the relationships with mother or father. Maybe it is the right explanation, maybe it is not. What I liked about the book was:
1. The suggested strategies to deal with a bad relationship situation make sense and work. I used many of them intuitively without any advice (journalling, a network of helping friends, costs and benefits analysis, etc).
2. More importantly, I could relate to some stories. It had a therapeutic effect on me. It made me see clearly what is going on with me.
3. I hope the book prepares me to enter a new future relationship with more self-awareness and with more conscientiousness.

Would you listen to Inventing Japan [Modern Library Chronicles] again? Why?
Maybe
Any additional comments?
I guess, I am not a fan of these kind of fast-paced overviews of the historical events: too many names, too much information. Not much left in my head after the listen.

I am an Orthodox Christian
Reviewed: 04-09-16
What does Bill Nye bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He is an amazing narrator!
Any additional comments?
I am an Orthodox Christian and I am always curious to see what the other side thinks about my faith. Obviously, the author mostly speaks to Protestants when he is making fun of religion. Orthodox Christianity admits the view of "directed evolution": the evolution "directed" by the God. From that perspective, nothing Bill Nye says in the book can shaken my faith. The book itself is a fascinating listen: I learned about many curious things about evolution and archeological discoveries.

Story
Between 1995 and 2007, the Republic of Ireland was the worldwide model of successful adaptation to economic globalisation. The success story was phenomenal: a doubling of the workforce; a massive growth in exports; a GDP that was substantially above the EU average. Ireland became the world's largest exporter of software and manufactured the world's supply of Viagra. But there were two big problems....

Good for getting a view on Irish politics/econ
Reviewed: 03-11-13
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
If you would like to get a view on what is going in Irish politics and economics (and demystify the celtic tiger phenomenon), this book is a good source. The problem with the story is that the author didn't separate two things: corruption and cronyism on the one side, and market economy and small government on the other side. It looks like he implicitly assumes that the lack of regulation is a very bad thing per se. While defending this stance might take another book, he should have explicitly articulated his views in this book. It is important, because it is an accepted view that the Irish economy grew so fast due to the small government. Which means that not everything was that bad in the deregulated Irish economy.

Story
After a decade of rapid growth, the world’s most celebrated emerging markets are poised to slow down. Which countries will rise to challenge them? To identify the economic stars of the future, we should abandon the habit of extrapolating from the recent past and lumping wildly diverse countries together. We need to remember that sustained economic success is a rare phenomenon. As an era of easy money and easy growth comes to a close, China in particular will cool down.

Any additional comments?
After listening to this book, I feel that I understand the developing world much better. I totally agree with everything the author said about my home country -- Russia. This makes me think that what he says about other countries is also quite true. The author carefully examines each country and provides a lot of facts, which he thinks are important in making investment decisions in these countries. If I am to talk about Russia, I would probably use the same facts as he provided in the book.
