Story
Getting his client off death row could save his career...or make him the next victim. Daniel Pike would rather fight for justice than follow the rules. His unique ability to "connect the dots," to observe what others do not, has made him the most notorious criminal lawyer in St. Petersburg. But when his courtroom career goes up in smoke, he fears his lifelong purpose is a lost cause. A mysterious job offer from a secretive boss gives him a second chance but lands him an impossible case with multiple lives at stake.

The author should hire a narrator.

I liked the story but the author did himself a disservice by reading it himself. Many of the characters had the same cadence to their speech and the ethnic accents were just not there.
I know it’s been said, “If you want something done right, do it yourself”, but in this case a better axiom might be “Never practice another man’s trade”, or perhaps “Stay in your lane”.
IMHO, a really solid narrator would have made it much more enjoyable. I may come back to this series, but right now I’m kinda put off.
Just my .02 cents. 🤷🏻♂️

New town, new school. Same story. I'm Laura, I've spent most of my life crisscrossing the county yielding to the whims of my transient mother. We've never stayed in one place long enough to call it home, and I don't have any hope of that changing. I follow the rules; no drawing attention to myself, no friends, and especially, no boys.

The characters are just too exasperating!

I understand trying to build suspense, but getting explanations was like pulling teeth! 😬
Everyone is so hesitant to explain to this poor girl what is happening to her, then just when it seems something might be revealed, another character will decide the moment is getting too awkward, and say “Let’s order pizza.” and the whole thing gets dropped.
The girl gets overly offended by silly things and just glosses over things that would make most people really angry.
She completely ignores what should be obvious important questions about who certain people are and why they’re even there, then the book just ends with more questions than answers.
This is a blatant attempt to coerce you to buy the next book, but by the time I finished it, I was so irritated I just didn’t care.
Sorry, it was in interesting premise, but this one just wasn’t for me. 🤷🏻♂️
