Not really top notch, hard science science fiction. Got a bit ridiculous towards the end. But entertaining enough to see it through to the end.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this series. Love all the main characters and the mix of mystery and romance. Wish there were more than three to this series!

Wonderful MM Historical Romance/Cozy Mystery

I was always skeptical of MM romance themed novels - in part suspicious because the vast majority of the reviews seemed to be by women. However, when I ran across KJ Charles’ Will Darling Series, which seemed to be both MM themed and a historical cozy mystery (my favorite genre for pleasure reading) I thought I’d give it a chance. So glad that I did. I very much enjoyed the first installment, “Slippery Creatures.” And with “The Sugared Game” I grew even more fond of the series and its central characters. Love the exploration of what it might have been like to be queer in the Edwardian Era; love the push-pull/attraction-repulsion dynamic between Will and Kim; love the supporting characters of Phoebe and Maisey (would love to see them developed a bit more fully); and love the delightful mix of genres - part historical fiction, part romance, part spy novel, part cozy mystery. And I will say that for me, I think KJC finds just the right balance when it comes to the spicy stuff. There are definitely several moments in both this and the previous installment that got me a bit hot and bothered, but it definitely wasn’t just one sex scene after another. There was a real plot there. I was disappointed to see that it seems that this series will end with book three. I hope the author will reconsider! But I see that s/he has written quite a few other MM romance/mystery novels, so I will look forward to exploring some of them, once I’ve finished the Will Darling series.

This novel was a little bit of everything. Mystery, thriller, historical fiction, MM romance. Overall, it was a fun, easy read. The spicy bits were appropriately spicy. All the central characters were interesting and eccentric. All but one was wholly likable. Definitely up for reading the next installment.

I can’t believe that it took me so long to finally read this charming classic of LGBT fiction. With vivid and engaging characters and evocative descriptions of 1960s life in both the north and the south, I was completely delighted with this novel. Anna Paquin does a great job with the narration as well.

This was about my 3rd outing with this series, and I continue to enjoy then. A fun, short tale for the holiday season.

Adequate but a bit below expectations. Nothing very compelling and sometimes got a bit lost among the various family tales. It was ok but not great.

I should have heeded the warnings from other listeners about the dreadful production quality of this audio version of Revelation Space. As many others have noted, the editiors/sound engineers responsible for the audio adaptation of the novel chose not to include pause or other auditory clue when this novel changes setting. Given that the narrative structure of this novel involves three distinct threads, each with it's own constellation of characters, in different times and even in different star systems, one might expect that when the story shifts from one of these radically different threads to another, there would some kind of pause or other form of indication the scene has changed, but no, there is none what so ever. This made for one of the most tedious Audible reads ever. I was constantly having to stop, and back up the story to see when it had transitioned from one thread to another. You're listening along, and suddenly you think, "what? oh we're back with those people? well, when the heck did that happen?!" Finally, about 2/3rds into the novel the three threads converge and it gets considerably easier to follow the story, but unless you fancy spending about 16 of 22 hours of narration scratching your head and backtracking to try to figure out what just happened, do yourself a favor and find a different recording. Let me be clear, this review should not be taken as a reflection on the skills of the author - I very much enjoyed his House of Suns. And I was eager to dive into this celebrated space opera the multi-volume epic series that is Revelation Space, and I'm deeply disappointed at the quality of product that Audible is trying to pass off here. It was so bad, I'm tempted to request a refund on this one. Nor should this review be taken as a dig at John Lee, the narrator. The performance that was dreadful was that of the producers/editors of this specific production. Lee's narration was at least serviceable here, though still not his best work.

I found the information in Alan Downs’s The Velvet Rage very interesting. And much of what he described about growing up gay in a homophobic society resonated with my own experience. Unfortunately, Downs fell victim to that temptation most sensible authors resist: narrating his own book. Dreadful idea. The author’s relentless monotone made for a rather soporific listen, despite the great content.
