Easy to Listen

Dan Jones avoids the dryness that sometimes can accompany a history text. He's an energetic narrator that held my attention easily. I've never been particularly curious about the Plantagenets, but I am now. I have one of his books as well. He has quite the knack for sharing his exuberance about history.

the narration is painful

I love the story, and have been a fan of the author for years. I have other audiobooks of Mercedes Lackey, and they're great. This narrator is technically fine, but the accents are strange choices making the characters sound utterly uninspiring. she's alow paced to the point of frustration. I couldn't get even 1/4 through it. I'll just read the text for this series. audiobook not recommended

Story
After Cora Glass’s life was stolen by Harrow Faire, things just keep going from bad to worse. Unable to run, unable to escape, there seems to be no way to avoid what she’s become - the Contortionist. But a girl can only take so much. Haunted by an abandoned and seemingly sentient circus? Fine. The life of her best friend threatened unless she sacrificed herself? Fine. Tormented and stalked by a grinning madman who wanted to kill her, and now wants to do worse? That’s where Cora has to draw the line.

love the book in print & love the narration

The narrator performs with style that supports, not distracts from, the tale. I don't typically like audiobooks. For years, I believed I hated them. Who performs the narration is crucial, and this narrator has the perfect balance of acting, but not overacting, and getting the tone and pacing right.
All this author's books are dark, kinky, violent, erotic, fantastical and imaginative. It's the grim in fairytales. You probably know this already, but if you're new to her work and have reasons to want a trigger warning, be aware it might push a few buttons. It's a bit dark, like a modern fairytale with erotic tension. Some of the dark romances on here make me want to scrub my mind after. This isn't that type, IMO. It's pleasantly macabre and one of her better series. If you didn't know that...this is book 2. Get The Contortionist first. 😉
