Historia
It's been two months since Will Darling saw Kim Secretan, and he doesn't expect to see him again. What do a rough and ready soldier-turned-bookseller and a disgraced, shady aristocrat have to do with each other anyway? But when Will encounters a face from the past in a disreputable nightclub, Kim turns up, as shifty, unreliable, and irresistible as ever. And before Will knows it, he's been dragged back into Kim's shadowy world of secrets, criminal conspiracies, and underhand dealings.

All-time favorite
Revisado: 10-23-23
I’ve listened to this trilogy five times in the past year, and notice new things about the writing each time. It’s absolutely brilliant. One of my favorite books of all time.

Great little spooky romantic novella
Revisado: 03-26-23
Really enjoyed it. Dense characterization, angst, sexual tension, spookiness. I’m seeing one-star reviewers who didn’t like Davy, but I love a flawed protagonist. He’s only 20. He’s taken risks before out of infatuation/lust and they went badly wrong. Here he does that again and it works out for him. To me that’s not stupid, it’s hopeful the way romance should be. (And also what’s wrong with a lovable but stupid protag? We need those too. Justice 4 stupids.)
And to the reviewers saying the werewolves are “wrong,” LOL. Personally I like when an author puts their own spin on a trope instead of simply lifting others’ worldbuilding.

Toby never meant to be a highway robber, but needs must. He didn’t plan to impersonate a top London valet either, but when the chance comes to present himself as the earl of Arvon’s new gentleman's gentleman, he grabs it. Unfortunately, the earl is the man he seduced and robbed on the road to get here. Oops.

Fun story, uneven narration
Revisado: 02-20-23
I enjoyed the story a lot and thought the characters and relationship were as developed as one could possibly hope for in such a short piece. The dramatic twists at the end both felt earned and satisfying. This takes place in the same universe as “The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting,” which focuses on Toby’s siblings. That backstory is not at all necessary for the plot, but it did add a little extra pathos to Toby’s story.
James Joseph was an excellent reader but Ryan Laughton was, I’m sad to say, really stiff and unnatural. His performance really took away from the Toby POVs and it was hard to stay in the story during those chapters. It was a shame.

Historia
Social distancing came easily to Reagan. Maybe a little too easily. She’s always liked people better from afar. But Reagan doesn’t want her grandpa to be alone for Christmas this year - he’s already spent too much time on his own in 2020. So she heads back to her hometown with a dish of holiday Jell-O salad, hoping they can have a little normalcy. Hoping it will be safe...

Going to read instead of listening
Revisado: 02-04-22
I had to stop 10 minutes in. The reader is using this weird debauched slurring voice. She sounds drunk or like she has a concussion. Okay
Obviously that’s not true, it’s an artistic choice she’s making, but I hate it and it’s totally distracting. Will read ebook instead.

The second Dune installment explores new developments on the planet Arrakis, with its intricate social order and strange, threatening environment. Dune Messiah picks up the story of the man known as Muad'Dib, heir to a power unimaginable, bringing to fruition an ambition of unparalleled scale: the centuries-old scheme to create a superbeing who reigns not in the heavens but among men. Hmm
Revisado: 10-28-17
I was really startled when the book ended and almost nothing had happened. I wasn’t expecting it to be the same as Dune but this was so thin on plot it could have been 1/6 of Dune—the buildup to the actual story. Frank Herbert did a lot of telling instead of showing.

Fantastic book and performance; horrible audio quality
Revisado: 02-19-17
Hands-down one of the all-time very best Discworld books and a must for any fan of the City Watch. Nigel Planer's performances excellent.
The audio quality however is extremely bad and shifts in quality and volume throughout. Audible should put in the work to clean up the file because it's really shockingly bad for a digital download. The low-quality distracts from the book, which is saying something, because the book is absolutely gripping.
