A beautiful book!
Reviewed: 08-11-10
This was a beautiful book: well written, interesting characters, and a wonderful mix of joy and pathos. I LOVED IT. Probably the most emotionally satisfying book I can remember reading. The reader did a terrific job without getting bogged down in the emotional quality of the writing. When it was done, I wished there was more.

mediocre book, poor choice of reader
Reviewed: 11-19-09
The story was only mediocre, which could have been disguised with a really great reader. This reader sounded like an English college student and was a poor choice for this book. It often sounded like the characters, in a moment of high drama, were discussing which pub to go to for lunch rather than whether someone was a threat to national security!
It was often difficult to distinguish one character from the other also--the voices were pretty much the same. There were also many pauses in the reading that were extraneous to what was going on and detracted from the current action.

Content was pretty good, and lots of action throughout, but the reader trivialized it. Not a good choice for an otherwise interesting listen.

Story
Ripped from today's headlines, Brian Haig's new novel finds Army lawyer Sean Drummond caught between duty to Washington's elite and the soldiers in Iraq. Dispatched to investigate the suicide of one of D.C.'s most influential defense officials, an ardent, early supporter of the war in Iraq, Drummond and his female partner find themselves in the middle of a tug-of-war between Washington's most influential power brokers and his own personal allegiance to the soldiers dying overseas.

timely

The book is on a timely topic and really quite good. The reader, however, does not do justice to the character of Sean Drummond. As a consequence, Drummond came across as too much of a heavy. I hope that Scott Brick returns as reader in the next book by Haig.

Story
The Torus is the most expensive machine ever created by humankind, run by the world's most powerful supercomputer. It is the brainchild of Nobel Laureate William North Hazelius. Will the Torus divulge the mysteries of the creation of the universe? Or will it, as some predict, suck the earth into a mini black hole? Or is the Torus a Satanic attempt, as a powerful televangelist decries, to challenge God Almighty on the very throne of Heaven? Twelve scientists under the leadership of Hazelius are sent to the remote mountain to turn it on.

You're kidding, right?

After 8 years of listening to audio books, this is the worst I have ever heard. The book itself might have been interesting, but the reader's style is inappropriate and offensive. I stopped listening after about 90 minutes. I'll definitely avoid any other book read by Scott Sowers.
