In the tumultuous currents of modern life, Against the Waves emerges as a beacon of hope, advocating for a return to the divine order established by God's creation. This thought-provoking book addresses the disorientation and moral decay of our times by calling for a revival of Christian principles that once shaped the bedrock of Western civilization.

A must read for all Christians in America!
Revisado: 04-06-25
I’ve followed Jon’s work for several years now, and this is the third book of his that I’ve read, but I must say that it is the most impactful and important of his contributions to the emerging Christian movement that, Lord willing, will continue for many more years and lead to reformation that revives many hearts that have grown cold and cynical. Concise and compelling, each chapter stands on its own with practical steps each person can take as well as warnings they must heed. Encouraging yet not idealistic, “Against the Waves” inspires and equips. I can’t recommend this book highly enough - get it and read it right now!

Historia
Preston Sprinkle jumps into a compelling, passionate study of God’s perspective on violence. Examining both the seemingly angry, violent God of the Old Testament and the peacemaking Jesus of the New, Preston takes us back to Scripture to discern how God has really called His people to think and live in the midst of a violent world. He asks us to join him in inviting God to challenge our presuppositions, to set aside our biases and backgrounds and fears.

A flawed approach to an important matter
Revisado: 11-18-23
Way to many straw men to mention in this book… it was exhausting to tolerate them, but a friend of mine is thinking of leaving the Marine Corps because of Sprinkle’s arguments, so I listened to the whole book and even repeated parts. Hopefully I’ll be able to point out where Preston “jumps the shark” in his claims that killing is ALWAYS wrong and violence is NEVER justified. I honestly don’t think this book should be taken seriously…

Historia
On a dusty hilltop, Jesus once kick-started his church with a ragtag group of fishermen who called themselves "The Way". Within a remarkably short time, The Way became the world's most influential religious faith. Against impossible odds, that group of nobodies astonished the world. Two thousand years later - by any measure - Christianity is retreating on all fronts. The Way has lost its way. In The Way Back, media and marketing experts Phil Cooke and Jonathan Bock take a hard look at Christians today and reveal that we, as a salesforce, have lost our faith in our product.

Yeah, this hasn’t aged well… especially in light of recent events with Brian Houston, Andy Stanley, Russell Moore, and the current CEO of Chick-fil-a, etc… but there were some good points made…
Regarding the story of the millionaire becoming a janitor in a gay bar the authors state the people at the gay bar see Christians differently but don’t say anything other than that. So… I guess, if we make people who are on the highway to hell not hate us as much that’s mission accomplished then???🤷♂️
This almost 5-year old book needs some major revisions… and it’s no wonder the tide hasn’t turned much… Big Eva Christians continue to blow their credibility (especially in 2020-2021) and they’ve not gotten an ounce of it back since they shut down their churches during the “summer of love…”

Many Christians feel bombarded by the messages they hear and the trends they see in our rapidly changing world. How can we resist being conformed to the pattern of this world? What will faithfulness to Christ look like in these tumultuous times? How can we be true to the gospel in a world where myths and false visions of the world so often prevail? In This is Our Time, Trevin Wax provides snapshots of 21st-century American life in order to help Christians understand the times.

Pretty good advice to culture warriors!
I don’t know if it’s much use to those who are simply living faithful lives already though…

Historia
What image forms in your mind when you think of productivity? An assembly line? Spreadsheets? Business suits or workplace uniforms? In the ancient world, productivity didn't conjure images like these. Instead, it referred to crop yield and fruit bearing. This agrarian imagery helps us understand productivity through a biblical lens. Jesus taught, By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit (John 15:8). Who doesn’t want to have a truly productive life—to bear much fruit?

Such a good framing of the problem and by comparing it to secular productivity focus, I think we see where Christians can go astray… like I have with this topic. I’ll read/listen to this one again for sure!

Discrimination and Disparities challenges believers in such one-factor explanations of economic outcome differences as discrimination, exploitation, or genetics. It is listenable enough for people with no prior knowledge of economics. Yet the empirical evidence with which it backs up its analysis spans the globe and challenges beliefs across the ideological spectrum.

Maybe if the leftist, equality-of-outcome academic would read the truth, we could see the solutions to the problems big-government has created and stop pushing for the government to try to solve those problems, because they only keep getting worse when that happens... Einstein’s definition of insanity is applicable.

Historia
In this groundbreaking history of the modern American metropolis, Richard Rothstein explodes the myth that America's cities came to be racially divided through de facto segregation - that is, through individual prejudices, income differences, or the actions of private institutions like banks and real estate agencies. Rather, he incontrovertibly makes clear that it was de jure segregation - the laws and policy decisions passed by local, state, and federal governments - that actually promoted the discriminatory patterns that continue to this day.

Government created a problem; government can solve it — yeah right!
Revisado: 11-23-20
Idealistic and misleading. The author well makes the case for recognizing corrupt politicians of the past; but he fails to ascribe judgement where it is due: THE DEMOCRAT PARTY.
I only read this because a good friend recommended it; but I’ll make sure to give him some Thomas Sowell books so he can get re-educated.
This book belongs in a burn pile.

Historia
McCullough's John Adams has the sweep and vitality of a great novel. This is history on a grand scale, an audiobook about politics, war, and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship, and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Above all, it is an enthralling, often surprising story of one of the most important and fascinating Americans who ever lived.

Historia
Caleb Kalenbach is the Lead Pastor at Discovery Church in Simi Valley, CA. Raised in the LGBT community, he was exposed to how some Christians treated the LGBT community, and grew to hate Christians. In high school, he joined a Bible study to disprove the Bible, but ended up following Jesus instead. Later, his parents followed Jesus, too. This is the subject of his first book, Messy Grace - holding on to the truth of God's Word while being filled with grace.

Every Christian with a same-sex attracted friend must read this book!
Revisado: 08-26-20
There is such humility and wisdom in the writings of Caleb in this book! Coming from a man who has the credibility bought by experience, I am praying and believing this work will send shockwaves through the heart of the evangelical community.
It is so much more powerful and truthful than the compromising musings of folks like Jen Hatmaker and her husband... if you’ve bought her stuff, discard it and get this! It is a must read for every Christian with a same-sex attracted friend!

Here is a must-listen history of the Lone Star State, together with an insider's look at the people, politics, and events that have shaped Texas from the beginning right up to our days. Never before has the story been told with more vitality and immediacy. Fehrenbach re-creates the Texas saga from prehistory to the Spanish and French invasions to the heyday of the cotton and cattle empires. He dramatically describes the emergence of Texas as a republic, the vote for secession before the Civil War, and the state's readmission to the Union after the War.

What a story! Definitely makes you proud to be Texan if you are one!
Revisado: 08-15-20
This book will help you understand why students in Texas learn their state history in 4th grade and 7th grade; and if you were like me and experienced that, you’ll reflect with fond memories as you listen...
Much of this book may not be suitable for 4th or 7th graders, but it is very important to know your history - even, and maybe especially state history... or you’ll be doomed to repeat it!
