The assassination of the chief judge has pushed the Capitol to the edge. The Great Extermination has spread to all the land. The casteless must be annihilated. Their only hope is the fallen Protector Ashok Vadal. But Vadal is being held prisoner on the island of Fortress. In order to save those who need him most, he must escape and find his way across the demon-infested sea and return to Thera, the prophet of an illegal and forgotten god. Ongoing love for this series. It manages to avoid the obnoxious tropes of coming of age nonsense, isn't overly sexualized, and doesn't delight in endless drama. Instead, we get a cathartic epic that grows and expands in a fascinating and great ongoing series. 10 out of 10!

Story
As management reels from the unexpected conclusion of the seventh level, the surviving crawlers stumble onto the eighth and find themselves scattered. It’s a map based on Earth’s final days before the collapse, where ethereal, intangible ghosts of humanity go about their lives, oblivious of the impending doom. Living amongst these ghosts are monsters based in Earth lore. “Legendary” creatures tied to the geographical location they inhabit. Each team of crawlers is given a task: Find and capture six of these beasts.

This series somehow remains amazing with ample character development, tolerable drama, clever twists, memorable fights and scenes, and random wackiness with a growing universe that has me scratching my head as to how Dinniman hasn't written a bad book in this long running series yet. Terrific series devoid of overused tropes!

Raithe, the God Killer, may have started the rebellion by killing a Fhrey, but long-standing enmities dividing the Rhunes make it all but impossible to unite against the common foe. And even if the clans can join forces, how will they defeat an enemy whose magical prowess renders them indistinguishable from gods?

Step Backwards… Dumb Character Arcs
Reviewed: 08-16-23
Book 1 was great but this one kind of collapsed into what seems to be unrealistic “girl power” trope where the female characters are infallible and all powerful and the “men is dumb” to a degree that is insulting as there are no real traits suggesting half of them have any real talent for anything but complaining. Persephone is also objectively a terrible leader but the author uses her barely escaping her repeated bad decisions as proof she can save her people (really?) which is just crazy and mirrors a major problem with humans and the social psych aspects of politics (“they are great because they can save us from a problem they created and they are stupid and blindly ambitious!). The best characters were also pretty much shoved to the background in the second half of the book and plot armor garbage came screaming out at the end to prop up the biggest idiots of the story in a tear-filled series of hypocrisies that would make any cadre of teenage girls cheer in ignorant triumph. Pathetic writing after such a promising start of a story.

With every day that passes, the Dark Overlord grows stronger. For Ordinal to be safe, he must be stopped. As Windfall's army grows, so does the hope that Jim will prevail. Jim's got other problems, though, including an inside-out demon, an elf plague, missing townspeople, and a lonely badger. With Jim gone, Fenris tries to hold down the fort, but he has an Assassin running free in Windfall and a prickly pair of royals to deal with. Does Ordinal really stand a chance against the ever growing darkness?

Return to Form
Reviewed: 06-22-23
I was highly concerned Rimmel had gone the route of so many other authors with lengthy sagas (e.g. Robert Jordan) and just spiraled off into nonsense and inconsistent character development after the plunge in quality and character consistency that was Nautical Noobs. Not the case here, story did swing more into a triple buddy novel, which I liked as it let most of the book swing away from Jim being near invincible to enjoying “the big dog” and Professor Badging-ton taking the lead for chunks. His having access to all his skills at the end doesn’t make a lot of sense but overall but was still highly entertaining and advanced the story without forcing unwanted romantic interests, drama, or bad intrigue pushing character flaws (which is mainly what I want and want to avoid in escapist reading), which was something Nautical Noobs didn’t really do as Julia remains a terrible character and Jim placating her when he is pretty apathetic to the nonsense of near everyone else continues to be a character misstep in terms of psychological consistency. But she wasn’t in this book much so another plus! Enjoyable book and saga. Continuing to look forward to the next installment of it as it progresses forward. Thank you Mr. Rimmel for reigning it back in!

This series remains amazing with a colorful cast, highly intriguing story with numerous twists and turns, a liberal sprinkling of humor, and a neo-dystopian setting with a fun combination of high fantasy, insanity, and space age. Easily one of my top 3 series with 5 star ratings from all the books so far. No preaching, coming of age, or overly dramatized nonsense here. Strap in and enjoy the ride with a diva cat summoner and a psychotic bomber running around in his undies with a cape!

Step Down in Story Quality
Reviewed: 01-10-22
As a lover of the original Threadbare trilogy, I can’t say this was a great addition to the overall story. Cecelia became a dumb damsel in distress, Threadbare is annoyingly co-dependent, minimal attention was paid to the lit-rpg aspects in favor of the childish drama and a host of artificially bad decisions that ramps up the drama but is highly inconsistent with how the characters acted in the original trilogy. The Mediocre little medium characters also have come over to drag down the narrative and will likely take up story time from the interesting host of characters in the original Threadbare world. Finally, shifting from a cadre of skin walking demons to a dumb bunny pirate rife with dumb puns… bleh. Hoping Seiple wipes his mind of whatever is going on and gets back to the basics of his previously well-written lit-rpgs (start by killing off the dumb bunnies and little medium characters and move away from the not so-subtle sociopolitical nods that most of us seek to escape in our fiction-based literature).

Story
After dying and being reborn into a world that's built like a video game, Jim has found himself stuck in a very old-world style new-player zone for low-level adventurers. Unfortunately, the zone fell out of use centuries ago, and no one told the monsters they were supposed to take it easy on the Noobs. Even worse, the only new player around is Jim. Jim has been given an opportunity, and he'll do his best to take advantage of it.

Story
Ashok Vadal was once a member of the highest caste in all of Lok. As a Protector, he devoted his life to upholding the Law, rooting out those who still practiced the old ways and delivering justice with his ancestor blade Angruvadal. None was more merciless than he in stamping out the lingering belief in gods and demons among the casteless. His brutality was legendary and celebrated. But soon Ashok learned that his life to that point had been a lie. He himself, senior member of the Protector Order, was casteless. He had been nothing more than an unwitting pawn in a political game.

Great Series
Reviewed: 03-17-19
As someone jaded on most the current swords and sorcery fantasy, I am overjoyed there is a series like this that presents novel takes on typical troupes and characters by having a strong and consistent protagonist that isn’t really good or bad. Great world building, subtle inclusions of drama and light humor. Extremely well written and narrative.
