Wine & Vinyl Club

De: Chris David and Christian
  • Resumen

  • Welcome to the Wine and Vinyl Club. A podcast for people who love drinking wine and listening to good music. Once a fortnight David, Chris and Christian discuss an album from an eclectic mix of classics from the Beatles through to Harry Styles. Then the fun part, we attempt to match a bottle of wine to the album and also sample a value wine and occaisionally a cocktail too. We hope to encourage our listeners to try something different when drinking or listening to music and most importantly have a laugh with us.

We did think that most of the ‘value wines’ we brought this season were terrific value. But for the absolute cream of the crop, here are our top three value wines.

3rd place was the Zema Estate, Coonawarra 2018 Shiraz $22.00 with a score of 35/40. https://www.zema.com.au/product/2018-Shiraz?srsltid=AfmBOopJ7ZAFr_jXIpQlViOiWB0v54prtQHoOvir0qeKGKc1Lw-ZX0Zz

There were two wines at joint 2nd position with a score of 28/30. The $28 2023 Filius Chardonnay from Vasse Felix in Margaret River, Western Australia.https://www.vassefelix.com.au/product/2023-Filius-Chardonnay

And the 2019 Dopff Au Moulin, Alsace Pinot Noir from Alsace in France for $35. https://www.dopff-au-moulin.fr/en/home/

The number one W&VC best value wine for season 4 (scoring 30/30) is the COSTCO $7.99 2017 Faustino Rivero Ulecia, Reserva from Rioja in Spain. https://www.bodegasfaustino.com/en/

Best wine match to the album

Equal 3rd place (scoring 22/30) was the Konpira Maru Pan Opticon from the Merkell Vinyard in King Valley, Victoria, Australia. https://vsimports.com/australia/konpira-maru/pan-opticon/ Which Christian brought to match The Beat “I Just Can’t Stop It”

And to match “Cosmic Thing” by the B52s Christian brought an 2021 Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara California for $70. https://aubonclimat.com/

Coming in second with a score of 23/30 to match “The Stranger” by Billy Joel, Christian brought a $70 bottle of 2016 Levrier by Jo Irvine Anubis Cabernet Sauvignon, from Eden Valley in the Barossa, South Australia. https://levrierwines.com.au/products/anubis-cabernet-sauvignon-magnum

We had two drinks taking out the top position of best match with a score of 25/30. The first was the Athens Ice-Tea which David brought to match “Cosmic Thing” by the B52s.

And equaling the high score of 25/30 was the $28 bottle of 2020 Bodega Garzon Tannat Reserva, from Uruguay. https://bodegagarzon.com/en/wine/tannat-2020/ Which Chris brought to match “The Queen is Dead” by The Smiths.

  • S4 Ep10. Voulez Vous by ABBA
    Mar 5 2025

We finish the season with a truly iconic band and an album full of bangers, or is it?

Kate’s back in the club and does her best to reign us in (with little success). A lot of alcohol was consumed during the recording of this episode, which likely explains why we get a bit slurry. We hope you enjoy listening and look forward to doing it all again in season 5.

Every episode the podcast has an accompanying Spotify Playlist. Below is a link to 30 tracks made from a selection of tunes from this episode’s album, plus additional artists we think you might like if you enjoyed listening to this album.

To loosen our vocal cords David brought a bottle of $39 MeiJian Umeshu (Japanese plum wine).

To match ‘Voulez-Vous” Christian brought an $80 bottle of Pangea 2011 Apalta Vineyard Syrah (Colchagua Valley), Chile. https://www.wine-searcher.com/find/pangea+sra+apalta+colchagua+valley+chile/2011/australia?srsltid=AfmBOoogJy2vpZePoN8-b_yluBobkWU9cAKL98vli26stTjFXfO_NN5B

For our value wine Kate went to COSTCO and bought a $19.00 bottle of Oyster Bay Pinot Noir from Marlborough, New Zealand. https://www.oysterbaywines.com/au/our-wines/marlborough-pinot-noir/

    WINE RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THIS EPISODE:

David strongly recommends finding some Umeshu (Japanese plum wine) and trying it on the rocks, or with soda or ginger ale.

Chris suggests trying some South American wines such as Malbec or Carmenere particularly a bottle from Ventisquero. Also, why not try a ‘Pinoff’ between a Pinot noir from New Zealand vs one from Australia.

  • S4 Ep9. (What's the story?) Morning Glory
    Feb 19 2025

A huge album and a huge wine to match it. Do Chris, Christian and David agree on this album? Definitely not! But no matter our differences, we all agree the wines are stunning and the Gallagher brothers were funny as f*#! Apologies for all the swearing in this episode, but it’s hard not to when quoting Liam and Noel.

Every episode the podcast has an accompanying Spotify Playlist. Below is a link to 30 tracks made from a selection of tunes from this episode’s album, plus additional artists we think you might like if you enjoyed listening to this album.

    W&VC SPOTIFY PLAYLISTS – S4 Ep9. Oasis: (What’s the Story?) Morning Glory

    https://open.spotify.com/playlist/42aDxuyk5m7ZGQvjF5J18J?si=8ab63c810a0a4cc1

To match ‘(What’s the Story?) Morning Glory’ by Oasis, Chris brought a $110 bottle of 2019 Clos Saint Jean, Chateauneuf du Pape in France. https://closstjean.fr/

For our value wine Christian went to COSTCO and bought a $7.99 2017 Faustino Rivero Ulecia, Reserva from Rioja in Spain. https://www.bodegasfaustino.com/en/

    WINE RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THIS EPISODE:

Although Chris likens the Chateauneuf du Pape blend to an Australian GSM but they are not really comparable. Perhaps try one of Chris’s favourite Australian Shiraz blends, the Yarra Yerring Shiraz Viognier. However, if you are in the market for a stunning wine and your price point will stretch to over $100, get this wine the 2019 Clos Saint Jean, Chateauneuf du Pape. We don’t think you will be disappointed.

Rioja’s in general tend to be good value, and for $7.99 its unlikely you will find a better value wine than the 2017 Faustino Rivero Ulecia, Reserva from COSTCO.
