True Grit Art Gab! Episode 2: Demystifying the Abstract
Ever wondered what those wild shapes and colors in abstract art are all about—or why they might make you feel a little apprehensive? In this episode, we’re peeling back the layers of abstract art’s history, from its roots in 1870s Impressionism to its explosive peak with the New York School. We’ll trace the journey through Pissarro’s brushy hints, Cézanne’s structural shake-up, Kandinsky’s color symphonies, and the raw energy of Pollock, Krasner, and Frankenthaler. Along the way, we’ll explore how formalism gave artists the freedom to ditch reality and let form speak. Plus, we’ll spotlight local artist Kelly Russo, whose vibrant, layered works carry this legacy forward. Join us at True Grit Art Gallery in Middleboro, MA, for Kelly’s exhibit Elements of Curiosity, opening Saturday, April 12, 6-8pm at 38 Center St, running through May 3, 2025—all are welcome! Whether you’re an art lover or just curious, this episode will make those “weird” canvases feel a little less mysterious.
