  • #100 - Sleep As The Fountain Of (Facial) Youth
    Jun 16 2025

Matt delves into the science of "beauty sleep" this week, revealing it as somewhat of a scientific reality. He highlights research by Dr. Tina Sundelin, which demonstrates that sleep-deprived individuals are consistently perceived as less healthy, more fatigued, and less attractive. These visible changes are rooted in biological consequences like dilated under-eye blood vessels and elevated cortisol, a hormone that degrades vital skin collagen.

Matt then differentiates between expression wrinkles and a distinct second class, sleep wrinkles, which are caused by the mechanical compression of the face against a pillow. To mitigate their formation, he explains several evidence-based strategies. These include adjusting your sleep posture to your back, using silk or satin pillowcases to reduce friction, and maintaining skin hydration to improve its natural elasticity. The episode concludes with a powerful reminder that while these scientific interventions are effective, true attractiveness comes from within, encouraging a graceful embrace of the natural aging process.

  • Ask Me Anything Part 19: The Sleep Science of Her
    Jun 9 2025

Dr. Eti Ben Simon returns for yet another AMA episode, this time specifically focussing on sleep and women. Together, they delve into the nuanced differences in sleep patterns between men and women, exploring aspects like sleep duration, quality, and architecture, including variations in deep sleep and REM sleep. They discuss how females generally sleep slightly longer, experience fewer awakenings, and have more deep sleep early in the night, alongside a quicker onset of REM sleep. The conversation also touches upon the potential health risks associated with shift work, particularly night shifts, highlighting an observed associational link with increased risks for certain cancers, such as breast and skin cancer, though emphasizing this is not necessarily causal.

The discussion then transitions to the profound impact of hormonal changes on female sleep throughout different life stages. Matt and Eti examine the common sleep disturbances during pregnancy, detailing the reasons such as physical discomfort, hormonal shifts, and frequent urination, and the consequences like mood disorders and increased risk of gestational diabetes. They further explore how sleep is affected by the menstrual cycle, with changes in REM and deep sleep across follicular and luteal phases, and then tackle the significant sleep challenges during menopause, including insomnia, sleep apnea, and restless legs syndrome, discussing management strategies like HRT and CBT-I.

  • #99 - Insomnia in 7 Days with Dr. Aric Prather
    Jun 2 2025

Sleep expert Dr. Aric Prather joins Matt today for a fascinating discussion about insomnia's frustrating reality: trying to force sleep backfires; sleep arrives naturally. Dr. Prather highlights a surprising starting point: forget focusing on bedtime, prioritize a consistent wake-up time, even weekends. Noting that this anchors your internal clock and builds essential sleep pressure (the 'balloon'), he also cautions that sleeping in after a bad night disrupts this cycle.

After touching on societal factors impacting sleep, the conversation shifts to managing the mental side—the stress and anxiety creating that 'tired but wired' state. Dr. Prather shares practical techniques: daytime micro-breaks, breathing exercises, and scheduling worry time to keep thoughts from hijacking the night. Listeners learn how the bedroom can become a trigger for wakefulness and how stimulus control (getting out of bed when not sleeping) breaks that association. Finally, they cover Time-in-Bed Restriction: deliberately spending less time in bed can paradoxically consolidate sleep by intensifying sleep drive, building confidence. This episode offers tools not for nightly success, but for improving sleep on average and reducing panic over occasional bad nights.

Please note that Matt is not a medical doctor, and none of the content in this podcast should be considered medical advice in any way, shape, or form, nor prescriptive in any way.

I am very much enjoying learning more about sleep, and the many ways it can affect us! Thank you for this informative and enjoyable podcast!

Fascinating and well-delivered information!

As I write this review, there are 26 podcasts in the series and they have all been enjoyable, 10-20 minutes in length, science-based, free from profanity, and delivered in a calm, easily understandable manner. Laypersons and scientists alike will enjoy the useful information, and Dr. Walker's passion for communicating it is contagious. He is a gifted educator. Each podcast leaves one feeling empowered with the knowledge of how to support one's own sleep, eager for more episodes, and in a happier mood from his sheer exuberance about the topic. 5 stars!

Updated review: 45 podcasts in and still well worth tuning in. I look forward to each episode (released every 2 weeks), and I hope Dr. Walker continues to share his knowledge and enthusiasm about sleep for a long time coming :) 5 stars!

Congratulations to Dr. Walker on reaching the 50-podcasts milestone--particularly as they remain relevant, educational, and entertaining. I particularly enjoy the new format, called "Hot Off the Press", in which current research findings on a topic are discussed in a manner we all can understand and enjoy. I can honestly say that I look forward to each new episode, even after 2 years of listening :)

Updated review: 67 podcasts along and I still look forward to each new one to learn more about sleep. I enjoy the single-topic ones and the guest/Ask-Me-Anything ones. It remains positive and science-based format, which is a refreshing change from much of what is out on the Internet and airwaves nowadays. I look forward to learning more in the coming episodes, and I appreciate all the hard work going into them.

Updated review: Congratulations to Dr. Walker on reaching the big 100 (podcast episodes, that is). Having been a listener from the very beginning, I can say that the podcast is still entertaining and informative. I enjoy the various formats, and am hopeful that there will continue to be the occasional "Hot Off the Presses" episodes, particularly any on progress with school start times, getting rid of twice-yearly time changes, and other "sleep-health advocacy" topics. Well done on reaching 100!

Refreshingly positive and science-based at 100
