Episode 398 - CO-HOST - Vic Turnbull - MIC's Podcast Club Online Community and Support For Podcasters Around The World

Vic is a podcast producer and music geek and runs MIC media, her podcast production company. For a more up-to-date glance of what they get up to head to their website here.

MIC media is a social enterprise that amplifies often underheard stories and voices. In 2022, MIC won the Silver Award in the Grassroots Production category at the Audio Production Awards and in the same year nominated for a Manchester Culture Award. MIC’s also received a nomination in the British Podcast Awards and the Manchester Publicity Awards (MPA).

Also in 2022, Vic contributed to The Guardian and Third Sector news as a podcast specialist.

In recognition of her achievements to date, Vic features in the Top 100 Women in Social Enterprise List 2022 (WISE 100, Natwest and Pioneers Post), was nominated as the ‘Social Impact Star’ at the Inspiring Women Changemakers Awards (2019), is recognised as a role-model on the prestigious Northern Power Women Future List 2017. In 2019 she was awarded a place on the competitive School for Social Entrepreneurs and Lloyds Bank start-up business development programme.

Originally and proudly from Sheffield, Vic decided that after her GCSE’s, she was done with the formalities of education, and went down a more vocational route, from a National Diploma in Media Production at College, to then graduating with HND in the same subject from Salford Uni. Vic’s been an honorary Manc for eighteen years and now her accent is a hybrid Lancashire / Yorkshire, super Northern one.

She’s a massive advocate of the power of informal learning, DIY approaches and talent as routes to success and amplifying underrepresented voices.

MIC's (virtual/in-person) Podcast Club for global podcastersWhat we’re about

Helpful and supportive regular online and in-person get-togethers for podcasters from everywhere!

We're a community of global podcasters who help each other make brilliant podcasts.

We all make podcasts as producers, editors or presenters.

Each Podcast Club meetup is a real-life podcaster FAQ asked and answered by the awesome MIC podcaster community who come from across the world.

(yep it says Manchester, that's where we're based - it won't let us put EVERYWHERE!)

Our monthly events are online, and we (aim to!) host quarterly in-person meetups too, what we like to call our 'socials'.

We also have a special podcaster guest most months to give their expert take on a chosen podcasty subject. To date, we've had talks from chart-topping and award-winning podcasters about shortform podcasting, rating and reviews and remote recording.

    Mar 15 2025

Podcasthon.org 2025 - Humane World - The Humane Society Charity and Why We Support Them

As long standing supporters of our local Humane Society, we wanted to feature this charity as our recommendation for oour invlovement in Podasthon.org's 2025 feature this week.

Podcasthon is the world’s largest podcast charity initiative, bringing together podcasters globally to raise awareness for charitable causes. Behind this growing movement are two visionary co-founders: Jérémie Mani and Yves Delnatte.

Jérémie Mani is a French entrepreneur with over 20 years of experience in the digital industry. Before dedicating himself entirely to Podcasthon, Jérémie built and sold two successful companies in email marketing and content moderation. After moving to Canada in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he began reflecting on how he could use his skills to make a meaningful impact. Rather than launching another business, he wanted to create something that would mobilize thousands of people for a greater cause. That’s where Podcasthon was born—a volunteer-driven initiative aimed at uniting the power of podcasting with the needs of charities.

Yves Delnatte is a seasoned entrepreneur and investor with a rich background in business development. He has founded and led multiple ventures across various industries, bringing a wealth of experience to the table. Yves’s journey has been marked by a commitment to leveraging business as a force for good, which naturally led him to co-found Podcasthon alongside Jérémie. His vision is to harness the intimacy and authenticity of podcasts to drive awareness for important causes, creating a global ripple effect of positive change.

Traditional fundraising methods like charity galas, marathons, and auctions have their limits. They often require large budgets, exclusive access, or short-lived engagement. Meanwhile, charities around the world struggle to reach new audiences and create long-term connections.

Podcasthon started in 2023 with 300 French-speaking podcasters. It grew to over 400 in 2024 and is now expanding worldwide. Our dream? To see Podcasthon become a global tradition, uniting thousands of podcasters in dozens of languages each year.

We believe that “podcasting for good” should be more than a buzzword. It should be a movement. By leveraging technology, storytelling, and community engagement, we hope to inspire millions of listeners to care, to act, and to make a difference—one podcast at a time.

    Embracing Vulnerability and Genuine Storytelling

Vulnerability can be a powerful tool in podcast storytelling:

    1. Share personal experiences: Opening up about your own journey can create deeper connections with listeners

    2. Acknowledge challenges: Be honest about obstacles you've faced in your podcasting journey

    3. Ask questions: Show curiosity and humility by seeking input from your audience and fellow podcasters

    4. Create a narrative structure: Organize your episodes with a clear beginning, middle, and end to enhance storytelling

  • E393 - The Wizard of Oz Characteristics That All Podcasters Should Exibit for Their Listeners
    Mar 7 2025

Episode 393 - The Wizard of Oz Characteristics That All Podcasters Should Exibit for Their Listeners

The main characters from The Wizard of Oz movie and their quests for completeness offer interesting parallels to the characteristics of an effective podcaster:

    • Dorothy - Seeking Home:
Dorothy's quest to return home reflects a podcaster's need to find their authentic voice and niche. Just as Dorothy discovers her inner strength, a successful podcaster must develop their unique perspective and personality. This authenticity helps create a connection with listeners, making them feel "at home" with the content.

    • Scarecrow - Seeking a Brain:
The Scarecrow's desire for intelligence mirrors a podcaster's need for knowledge and preparation. Like a well-prepared host, an effective podcaster should always be researching topics, understanding their audience, and staying informed about their subject matter. This ensures they can provide valuable, well-thought-out content to their listeners.

    • Tin Woodman - Seeking a Heart:
The Tin Woodman's quest for a heart parallels a podcaster's need for empathy and emotional connection. A great podcaster must be able to connect with their audience on an emotional level, showing compassion and understanding. This helps create a sense of humanity in their content, making it more relatable and engaging for listeners.

    • Cowardly Lion - Seeking Courage:
The Cowardly Lion's search for courage reflects a podcaster's need for confidence and authenticity. Successful podcasters must be brave enough to share their true selves, opinions, and experiences. This courage allows them to tackle challenging topics, ask tough questions, and create compelling content that resonates with their audience.

    • The Wizard - Revealing the Truth:
The Wizard's revelation as an ordinary man behind a facade relates to a podcaster's need for transparency and honesty. Like the Wizard, podcasters should be genuine with their audience, admitting when they don't have all the answers and being open about their own learning process. This honesty builds trust and credibility with listeners.

    • In conclusion, just as the characters in The Wizard of Oz discover that they possessed their desired qualities all along, successful podcasters often find that the key to their success lies in developing and showcasing their inherent strengths, authenticity, and passion for their chosen topics.___https://howtopodcast.ca/
