  • Does the CMA Apology Go Far Enough? Indigenous Sovereignty of Health And The Pathway To Healing with Dr. Jamaica Cass
    Apr 10 2025

Is it too late to say sorry? Do apologies for medical harm actually create change?

The Canadian Medical Association recently issued an apology to Indigenous Peoples for the harms inflicted upon them by the medical system, acknowledging a history of racism, neglect, and abuse. In this crucial episode, we delve into the significance of this apology and explore what true transformative medical justice must entail for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples in Canada.

Our esteemed guest, Dr. Jamaica Cass, a First Nation physician, brings her invaluable perspective to this vital conversation. We discuss the limitations of apologies without concrete action and the urgent need for systemic change that respects and upholds Indigenous sovereignty within healthcare. Dr. Cass sheds light on the necessary steps to dismantle colonial structures in medicine, foster culturally safe practices, and ensure equitable access to care that is self-determined by Indigenous communities.

Join The Gritty Nurses as we unpack what accountability looks like beyond words, and envision a future where Indigenous health and well-being are centered through the recognition of their inherent rights and sovereignty in healthcare delivery.

  • Speaking Through Silence: Broken Oaths & Healthcare's Lack of Morality On The Crisis in Palestine with Dr. Yipeng Ge
    Mar 20 2025

You would sooner see a medical society protect a physician who has sexually assaulted numerous patients than see them openly defend a physician who stands against the genocide of the people of Gaza/Palestine. This is where we are....and it is SHAMEFUL.

In this episode, Amie Archibald-Varley, Sara Fung and guest Dr. Yipeng Ge delve into the critical role of healthcare workers not remaining silent amidst the ongoing crisis in Gaza/Palestine. We discuss the ethical and moral obligations we all share in advocating for humanitarian principles.

    We'll explore:

    • The Silence and the Struggle: We will discuss the reasons why many healthcare workers feel unable to speak out, and the immense pressures they face.
    • Humanitarian Imperative: We will emphasize that hospitals and healthcare workers are protected under international humanitarian law, and must never be targets.
    • Advocating for Aid: We'll discuss the urgent need for consistent and unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza, and how we can use our platforms to raise awareness and support these efforts.
    • Protecting the Vulnerable: We will highlight the devastating impact of conflict on the most vulnerable populations, especially children, and the importance of prioritizing their safety and well-being.
    • The role of advocating against genocide: We will discuss how it is morally and ethically our job to advocate against genocide and how the ongoing war affects the delivery of humanitarian aid.
    • Using our platforms: We will discuss the importance of using all available platforms, to discuss the current situation, and to advocate for the protection of all civilian life.
    • Maintaining Our Humanity: Even in the face of unspeakable atrocities, it's vital to remember the shared humanity of all people. We'll discuss the importance of remaining compassionate, avoiding dehumanization, and recognizing that every life lost is a profound tragedy.
    • Compassion Amidst Atrocities: We will highlight how crucial it is to maintain compassion in the face of atrocities. We will discuss how compassion can drive us to advocate for peace, and how it is a vital part of what makes us human. We will also discuss how losing compassion, is losing a part of our humanity.
