• How does the thyroid affect the mitochondria?
    Mar 13 2025

Mitochondria are the energy powerhouses of our cells. They use oxygen to convert glucose to an energy-storing molecule called ATP, which plays a role in numerous functions involved in neurotransmission, muscle contraction, DNA and RNA synthesis, and more.

With thyroid hormones playing a vital role in regulating energy production within the mitochondria, the relationship between thyroid health and mitochondrial function is critical to our well-being.

Today I’m discussing the relationship between thyroid health and mitochondrial function and why balanced thyroid hormone levels are needed to maintain optimal mitochondrial function and overall health.

In this episode, you’ll learn about:
    - The effects of oxidative stress on the mitochondria
    - How thyroid hormones stimulate energy production and mitochondrial formation
    - The connection between autoimmune conditions and mitochondrial dysfunction
    - How thyroid medications can impact mitochondrial health
    - The potential effects of beta blockers on mitochondrial function
    - Common factors that contribute to mitochondrial damage
    - Selenium's role in thyroid health and its protective effects on mitochondria

As always, I hope you find this episode valuable, and I look forward to catching you in the next episode!

  • Managing Graves' Disease Without Methimazole (Save My Thyroid Audit)
    Mar 11 2025

It can be challenging to navigate your thyroid healing journey outside of conventional medical recommendations. While there is definitely a time and place for medication, for many people it isn’t the only option and a natural approach may be more desirable.

In today’s Save My Thyroid Audit, I’m talking to Paula, who was diagnosed with Graves’ disease and later fired by her endocrinologist when she chose to follow a natural treatment approach. Unfortunately, this is common for patients seeking alternative treatment options. In this episode, Paula and I discuss why she decided to try natural treatments, her experience with the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) diet and herbal supplements, the significant health improvements she’s seen so far, my recommendations for continued reduction of her symptoms, why individualized care is essential, addressing both physical and emotional aspects of thyroid health, and more.

While this isn’t the same as my comprehensive consultations with patients, I’m confident you’ll find this conversation valuable. If you would like to apply for an audit with me, you can do so by visiting https://SaveMyThyroid.com/audit. Enjoy the episode!

Emotional eating is a complex issue that many people face where they’re using food as a coping mechanism to deal with stress, anxiety, or other emotional challenges. Unfortunately, using food to feel better or as a distraction never pays off and typically leads to a cycle of overeating, guilt, and further emotional distress, making it difficult to establish a healthy relationship with food.

The key to starting to shift this pattern is to understand the underlying causes. The solution will not come through dieting but through a lifestyle shift and the development of healthier coping strategies.

Today I’m excited to share my conversation with Emotional Eating Expert, Tricia Nelson. Tricia lost fifty pounds by identifying and healing the underlying causes of her emotional eating. She is a TEDx speaker, whose talk has garnered over 2 million views on YouTube and the author of the #1 bestselling book, Heal Your Hunger: 7 Simple Steps to End Emotional Eating Now. Tricia is the host of the popular podcast, The Heal Your Hunger Show, and has spent over thirty years researching the hidden causes of the addictive personality.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:
    - Understanding the three main thyroid antibodies: TPO, TG, and TSI
    - The Triad of Autoimmunity
    - Four categories of triggers: food, stress, chemicals, and infections

  • Taking Too Much Thyroid Hormone (Save My Thyroid Audit)
    Feb 25 2025

Though I typically prefer a natural treatment route, there are times when thyroid medication is the best option. That said, monitoring thyroid hormone levels is crucial to ensuring that the best treatment choices are made as you progress on your thyroid healing journey.

In today’s Save My Thyroid Audit, I’m talking to Kim, someone who was experiencing hypothyroid symptoms and is likely dealing with Hashimoto’s. After her diagnosis, Kim was taking Armour Thyroid for 15 years, and she started noticing hyperthyroid symptoms. In this episode, Kim and I discuss her journey with various thyroid medications, how dietary changes have impacted her symptoms, the importance of comprehensive and ongoing testing, the role of stress in thyroid health, and more.

  • Can Hyperthyroidism Cause Liver Dysfunction?
    Feb 20 2025

Liver biochemical abnormalities are seen in 15-76% of patients with untreated thyrotoxicosis - that is, those not taking antithyroid medication. This liver dysfunction is typically related to direct injury to the liver, comorbid heart failure, and associated autoimmune conditions. The good news is that, in most cases, liver enzymes can return to normal without lasting damage to the liver.

Today, I’m exploring what the research shows about liver dysfunction in those with hyperthyroidism. I’m talking about the relationship between untreated hyperthyroidism and liver enzyme abnormalities, potential causes, and the importance of monitoring liver function in hyperthyroid patients.

In this episode, you’ll learn about:
    - Causes of liver dysfunction in those with hyperthyroidism
    - How antithyroid medications can affect liver enzymes
    - Specific liver enzymes impacted by untreated hyperthyroidism
    - The relationship between elevated alkaline phosphatase and bone density concerns
    - The correlation between heart failure and more severe liver dysfunction
    - Autoimmune conditions that can impact liver health

  • Going Beyond Diet, Lifestyle, and Testing with Dr. Catherine Clinton
    Feb 18 2025

“Standing in the flow of energy that the natural world offers is foundational to health.” - Dr. Catherine Clinton

The chemical/mechanical model has produced such an incredible paradigm in health. Diet, lifestyle, supplementation, and functional medicine testing are a crucial part of many people’s paths to optimizing their health. At the same time, many of us are doing it all but hit roadblocks in recovery that require incorporating new tools and strategies, like those offered by quantum biology.

Getting back into the context of the natural world through coherence, grounding, and sunlight is a free, accessible, and powerful approach that can make a profound difference to someone’s health. Today I’m excited to be joined by Dr. Caroline Clinton to explore the topic of quantum biology. Dr. Catherine is a licensed naturopathic physician who has spent over 16 years helping people overcome their health issues. She has learned how our quantum biological system is intimately and inseparably connected to the world around us and has seen the benefits for her own health and those of her patients.

In this conversation, Dr. Catherine and I discuss her experiences with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Lyme disease, and ulcerative colitis, how she first learned about quantum biology's impact on health, the benefits of grounding, sunlight exposure, and coherence, the significant positive impact of aligning with natural elements to support healing and maintain health, and more. Enjoy the episode!
