Context:

April 14th, 1944, almost five years since the United Kingdom entered the war against Nazi Germany. The inhabitants of your little town of Hastings on the south coast of England continue to lead a normal existence as best they can, despite food restrictions, daily blackouts, and the increased risk of bombings.

The only ray of hope and happiness in this chaotic world is your husband, Thomas Charles Bennett. It has now been a month since he was deployed to Kohima, a town in the mountains of northeast India, close to the Burmese border. The town is currently under merciless siege from Japanese troops based in the region. However, he has promised, despite the conditions, to write to you as often as he can. You are desperately waiting to receive that first letter, a sign that he is alive and will return to you soon.
