Neil Cox is a former English footballer and manager who built up an impressive 400 career appearances and was also capped at Under-21 level for England. The talented defender wore the colours of teams including Scunthorpe, Aston Villa, Middlesbrough, Bolton and Crewe, and has managed Leek Town and AFC Wimbledon since retiring as a player. Cox began his career at the town where he was born and for the club he supported as a child, Scunthorpe United. He began playing for his hometown club when he just 11 years old, progressing through the youth ranks before signing a professional deal in 1990.


His impressive performances gained the attention of Aston Villa in 1991, and he moved to the First Division side for a fee of£400,000. Cox enjoyed 50 appearances for Aston Villa, including a memorable victory over Manchester United in the 1994 League Cup Final. His next move was to Middlesbrough for a club record transfer fee of £1 million, and the club achieved promotion to the Premier League in his first season there.In the following years, Cox, capable of playing at centre or right-back, moved to Watford after a brief spell at Bolton Wanderers.


Cox went on to become Watford’s captain, and made over 200 appearances for the Hornets.Cox pursued a management career after hanging up his boots as a player, firstly at Leek Town, then sharing management duties with long-term friend Neal Ardley at AFC Wimbledon, and the pair successfully led the team to promotion in 2016.
