Graduation in Japan is a pretty major event, and it’s so different from what we might be used to in the U.S. Today. We’re going to explore all the details—how it’s celebrated, why it’s so special, and even why graduation happens in March instead of June! Japan has some unique traditions for graduation. In Japan, the school year ends in March, and that’s when graduation ceremonies are held. It’s not just about weather, though that’s definitely a bonus with the cherry blossoms! Since the school year starts in April, graduation takes place at the end of the school year in March. And another reason it happens in March is that it’s more aligned with the financial year in Japan, which also starts in April. So, it’s sort of a “new beginning” all around. The end of school and the start of the fiscal year are linked, and for many, graduation signifies a time of transition to adulthood, to the workforce, or to higher education.
