  • Luke 6:1-11 (Jesus and the Rule Police)
    Mar 10 2025

In Luke 6, Jesus encounters the rule-police (Pharisees) who call Him out for breaking the rules on the Sabbath. He declares in Luke 6:5, I am the Lord of the Sabbath! What is the meaning of Luke 6:5? If Jesus was willing to break the rules of tradition in His day to love people and show them compassion, then shouldn't we expect Him to do the same in and through us today?

5 Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” (Luke 6:5)

One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels. 2 Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”
3 Jesus answered them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4 He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.” 5 Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
6 On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. 7 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. 8 But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Get up and stand in front of everyone.” So he got up and stood there.
9 Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”
10 He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was completely restored. 11 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus. (Luke 6:1-11)

  • Luke 5:33-39 (Wineskin Parable)
    Mar 3 2025

In Luke 5, Jesus tells a parable about wineskins and also about a new patch on an old cloth. What is the meaning of these parables? Basically, Jesus is saying that He didn't come to mix the old covenant and the new covenant. He did not come to mix grace with law. He came to fulfill the law and offer us a whole new life as we receive His grace by faith.

Luke 5:36 Meaning: He told them this parable: “No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old.

Luke 5:37-38... 37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins.

Jesus eating with tax collectors and sinners tells us that we should expect Him to express His life through us today in ways that lead us to do the same thing. Who are the tax collectors and sinners of our day that Jesus wants to use you to invest in and be in relationship with?

Luke 5:32 - I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

  • Friend Your Sins Are Forgiven (Luke 5:17-26)
    Feb 17 2025

In Luke 5:20, before healing a paralytic, Jesus said to him, "Friend your sins are forgiven." Jesus has the authority to forgive sins. If you've received Jesus for salvation, you have complete forgiveness in Him. As you rest in your forgiveness and allow Him to express His life through you, He'll use you to share the gospel with others so that He can declare to them, "friend, your sins are forgiven as well!"

  • Luke 5:12-16 (If You Are Willing)
    Feb 10 2025

Jesus reaches toward people who are untouchable, invisible, or on the outside looking in. As He expresses His life through us, He will do the same thing through us today.

In Luke 5:12, a man with leprosy asks Jesus, "If you are willing, you can make me clean." He has faith in Jesus' ability to heal, but he is not sure if He is willing (probably because he doesn't feel worthy). In Luke 5:13, Jesus says, "I am willing!"

Luke 5:12 - While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy. e When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

Luke 5:13 - Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him.

  • Luke 4:38-44 (Meet Needs or Share the Gospel?)
    Jan 27 2025

Should we meet people's needs or share the gospel with them? Sometimes people will say things like, "Preach the gospel, and if necessary, use words," but what we see from Jesus is that words are necessary! In Luke 4:43, we see Jesus say that He must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God. But we also see that Jesus took time to serve people and meet their needs. Jesus provided tangible help and eternal hope, and as Jesus expresses His life through us, we can expect Him to use us to both meet people's needs and to share the good news of the kingdom of God with them!

    Jan 20 2025

In Luke 4, Jesus is teaching in the synagogue with authority, but He encounters a demon who is exercising his authority over another man. It's good vs. evil. One authority vs. another authority. Who will win and what does it mean for us today?
