The world feels beyond chaotic right now and it’s had me thinking a lot about the Church, it’s role, and even some opportunities we’re missing to be who God calls us to be in moments like these.

Three years ago, I left life as pastor. I don’t think I left pastoring, I just left getting paid for it and going to an office, but before I did, I led our congregation through a short series called BE ___.

I’ll explain a little more in the episode, and it could be a much longer series than it could, but for these next few weeks of summer, I’m revisiting those ideas and I want to do it with you. Let me know what you think!

  • Offshoot: Doubting Thomas and The Birth of the Church
    Jun 10 2025

Welcome to God Knows Where. I’m Brett Harris. In this space between the series we wrapped up last week and what’s ahead came the Sunday when we celebrate the birth of the Church: Pentecost, so I figured I’d share my take on Pentecost.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what this thing we call Church is all about, what it’s for, and what a gathered community is supposed help us do. You know? Easy questions with simple answers. More to come on all this in the weeks to come.

But for now, here’s my take on Pentecost as it relates to a different story of when the Holy Spirit arrives to the community of folks who followed Jesus after his death than the one we’re use to reading. Hope you enjoy today’s episode!

Here we are at the end of our eighth series! We’re pushing 140 episodes. Over 15,000 downloads. It’s still unbelievable. Grateful to all of you who listen. I’ve got nothing but love for you. Thanks for being here.

We’re wrapping up Jesus Was A Loser today with a look at that last part of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s quote that we’ve yet to touch on: power. He said in order to celebrate Christmas correctly, we have to lay down our power. That’s easy, right? We’ll see.

There’s plenty more to come. New ideas percolating. And we’ll see where it goes from here. God Knows Where that is, but, hey isn’t that the whole point?

I have been listening to God Knows Where since just after its launch and look forward to new episodes every week. Each time I learn something new and am challenges to think in new ways about Jesus and my faith. Plus, they’re only 10-15 minutes long….just right for a drive to work!

What a thoughtful, beautiful take on Jesus!
