E25 Rewind Relook at Bama loss to Vandy lessons and issues
Vanderbilt shocked the college football world by defeating No. 1 Alabama 40–35 on October 5, 2024, marking their first win over the Crimson Tide in 40 years and their first-ever victory over an AP top-five team. The Commodores dominated in time of possession, third-down conversions, and capitalized on Alabama’s mistakes to pull off one of the biggest upsets in program history.
This loss showed that Bama had problems and showed the defensive formula of how to beat Alabama.
Load the line of scrimmage and don’t let QB or the running backs run the ball effectively. Blitz and pressure the QB in the passing game and dare him to beat you with short and intermediate passes. Don’t give the QB time to throw the ball deep. Force the QB to use the short passing game betting that he cannot pick you apart and is likely to turn the ball over.
And on offense vs Bama, don’t turn the ball over, but use a ball control offense and a short and intermediate passing game to move the chains and let Bama’s lack of discipline to give you opportunities for big plays when a player blows an assignment.
