  • 507. Clarke Wolfe “A Shining Example”
    Mar 14 2025
Happy Friday, Everyone! Filmmaker Clarke Wolfe brought her short film “A Shining Example” to Sherman Oaks Film Festival 2024 and pulled in a pair of awards; the Filmmakers Award, chosen by our jury that is entirely made up of alumni, gave Clarke and co-writer Dylan Guerra the award for Outstanding Writing, Horror and a jury of one gave the film what we call, “Programmer’s Prize for Exceptional Filmmaking.” Don’t come at me too hard for saying this, but this darkly comic tribute to The Shining is, for me, better than the original book or film because the perspective is fresh and authentic. Clarke directed, co-wrote and played the lead character in the film. Much to my chagrin, “A Shining Example” played in the theater where I was not moderating Q&A’s, an unfortunate fact that kept me from praising Clarke’s work in front of an audience. Happily Clarke is among the first to hop onto the Discover Indie Film podcast after SOFF 2024, which made e feel a lot better that I was in the theater next door during her Q&A. • 506. 4Qs with ETA & Gema Rubi
    Mar 12 2025
What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Monday I posted my chat with writer/director ETA and lead actress Gemi Rubi about their thought provoking & engaging horror film, "White Gaze," that took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Featurette - Horror at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2024. I'm hoping you already listened to that great talk and here to follow up with their 4 Questions! Mar 10 2025
A new podcast is out to ail your case of the Mondays! Writer/Director ETA had a vision, and that vision turned into the incredibly compelling film “White Gaze.” This thought provokingly authentic parable about gentrification and appropriation is also an engaging horror film, and it took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Featurette - Horror at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2024. ETA pulled their lead actor Gema Rubi onto the podcast with them, which was extra fun because ETA literally pulled a non-actor friend into their film and it was a great choice. We had a lot of chatting the evening away on Zoom and I hope that everyone enjoys listening as much as we enjoyed talking. • 504. Ty Clancey “Drawn”
    Mar 7 2025
TGIF! Ty Clancey is a returning champion! Ty was on episode 366 to talk about his short film “Thank You For Staying,” an Official Selection at Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2021. After the podcast, he sent me his hilarious human-puppet hybrid comedy “Support.com and You!” and I loved it so much that we instantly threw it onto The Indie Channel. Ty came back to the podcast because in 2023 his beautiful, stylistic horror short “Drawn” was an Official Selection in Sherman Oaks Film Festival. In In classic Ty fashion, he didn’t realize that “Drawn” won the Grand Jury Award for Best Featurette, Horror and Best Cinematography for Stephen Tringali until I told him on the podcast! (If memory serves, he didn’t know about the awards “Thank You For Staying” won until he came onto the podcast. Not gonna lie. I enjoy my conversations with Ty so much that I may have to think of an excuse to bring him on again even before he makes another film. He was on episode 366 in March 2023 and here he is, back on episode 504 in March 2025. Maybe I should that he come back for a March 2027 episode? • 503. 4Qs with Gavin Gaitan
    Mar 5 2025
What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Writer/director Gavin Gaitan brought his film "Down Town" to SOFF 2024 and took home four awards: Best in Fest - Feature Film Grand Jury Award - Best Feature Film - Comedy Grand Jury Award - Best Director - Feature Film - Gavin Gaitan Grand Jury Award - Best Screenplay - Feature Film - Gavin Gaitan I was truly blown away with Gavin's film and I because I was not able to moderate his Q&A at the festival, I was thrilled to for the chance to have him on the podcast. And his follow-up 4 Questions didn't disappoint either! • 502. Gavin Gaitan “Down Town”
    Mar 1 2025
A beautiful March Monday to you all! What I am about to type is the absolute truth. The first time I watched “Down Town,” the crime-comedy-adventure feature film from writer director Gavin Gaitan, I said out loud, alone in front of the TV, “Holy f***ing sh*t.” And I probably said it three to four times in a row, because Gavin’s film simply blew me away. I wasn’t alone! The selection jury for the Sherman Oaks Film Festival gave “Down Town” the Best In Fest award! In fact, at SOFF 2024, Gavin’s film took home four awards: Best in Fest - Feature Film Grand Jury Award - Best Feature Film - Comedy Grand Jury Award - Best Director - Feature Film - Gavin Gaitan Grand Jury Award - Best Screenplay - Feature Film - Gavin Gaitan By the way, I was extra excited that Gavin was among the first of the SOFF 2024 alumni to jump onto the podcast. I was moderating the Q&A’s in theater 7 when “Down Town” was playing in theater 8, so that I was not able to moderate Gavin’s Q&A and tell him all of the things that I admire about his film. That’s what I love about the Discover Indie Film podcast; it gives me a second chance to have a conversation the filmmakers whose Q&A’s I did not get to moderate. What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Lindsay Harbert directed the wonderful short film “Talia,” co-producing with lead actor Amy Shaughnessy. The film was an official selection at Film Invasion - Los Angeles in 2024, taking home the Programmers Prize for Exceptional Filmmaking. As always, Lindsay and I had a terrific chat that was posted before the 4Qs that I hope you listened to before this one! It's hard to believe but today is the Discover Indie Film Podcast's 500th Episode! The time has certainly flown and I marvel, looking back, on how many amazing and inspiring filmmakers I've been able to chat with since the very first episode in 2017. Many guests over the years have asked if I'd ever be willing to turn the mic around and allow someone to interview me. I decided this milestone was as good a moment as any to give in. I asked Discover Indie Film's producer Karina to surprise me with a someoe who I've already talked to be my interviewer... I honestly had no idea who was going to interview me until I opened my front door! I want to thank everyone who listens and every single guest for making these 500 episodes possible! If you want to follow me on social media, I do my best to avoid all of them except... BlueSky. Click here to follow me on BlueSky! Finally, a quick photo credit to Chris Hall, an award-winning director and producer who loves photography and asked me to sit for some portraits. I was delighted to use this photo he took of me with my very first podcast mic! Chris Hall on Instagram Christopher J.
