  • IS AI RACIST? Christian Ortiz on AI’s hidden bias
    Jun 16 2025

Artificial Intelligence has rapidly integrated into our daily lives, becoming an essential tool across healthcare, transportation, and communication. However, a critical question emerges: is AI inherently biased? This question forms the cornerstone of a fascinating conversation with Christian Ortiz, founder of Justice AI – the world's first ethical AI system specifically designed to address and correct biases rooted in historical inequities.

The fundamental issue with AI, as Ortiz explains, stems from the data it processes. AI systems learn from vast datasets that predominantly contain Eurocentric ideologies and perspectives. As a decolonial technologist, he has observed how these systems perpetuate biases originating from settler colonialism and structures of discrimination that have been systematically embedded in Western societies.

Ortiz argues that these biases have real-world implications. He shares a powerful example from his work with a dermatologist in Denver who, realized his medical forms and diagnostic approaches were failing patients of color. When Justice AI analysed the intake forms, it revealed they were based entirely on Eurocentric diets and cultural assumptions, missing crucial information needed to properly diagnose and treat patients from different cultural backgrounds.

The development of Justice AI involved collaboration with over 560 marginalised individuals from diverse backgrounds around the world, each bringing approximately 30 years of knowledge to the dataset. This collective expertise forms the foundation of an AI system designed to counterbalance the biases present in mainstream AI platforms like ChatGPT.

  • ANDY BURNHAM: Hillsborough Law must criminalise state cover-ups
    May 7 2025

The culture of cover-up within British public institutions has devastated countless lives. From Hillsborough to the infected blood scandal to the Primodos drug tragedy, families have spent decades fighting for truth against a system where many in authority have colluded against them.

This episode explores the urgent need for the Public Authority Accountability Bill - commonly known as Hillsborough Law - with two powerful voices leading the charge: Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester who first introduced the bill to Parliament in 2017, and Marie Lyon, Chair of the Association for Children Damaged by Pregnancy Hormone Tests.

The bill would establish a legal duty of candour with criminal sanctions for officials who mislead or obstruct investigations. Equally crucial, it would ensure parity of legal funding at inquests, stopping the practice where public bodies hire top legal representation while families struggle with limited resources. As Burnham explains, "It has been too easy for authorities to cover up in this country and too hard for ordinary families to get to the truth."

Marie Lyon shares the harrowing story of how pregnant women were prescribed Primodos - a drug containing synthetic hormones at 40 times the dose in contraceptive pills - despite evidence dating back to 1967 showing it caused birth defects. The decades-long cover-up reveals a disturbing pattern: public bodies prioritising financial considerations over human suffering.

Despite Prime Minister Keir Starmer's commitment to enact the law before the 36th anniversary of Hillsborough, the deadline has passed. Campaigners remain vigilant against attempts to water down the legislation.

"The British government underestimates the strength of the British people because people do not give in and they keep fighting." says Burnham.

  • CLEAN FUEL, DIRTY POLITICS: The Suppression of Ammonia Fuel With Greg Vezina
    Apr 14 2025

A Canadian inventor successfully adapted a car to run on ammonia 40 years ago. Why did governments suppress this technology? Greg Vezina shares how ammonia could finally lead us to a hydrogen economy without building entirely new infrastructure.

His journey began with a single car conversion in the 1980s that sparked four decades of advocacy for ammonia as a cleaner energy alternative. The chairman and CEO of Hydrofuel Canada shares how he successfully adapted a Chevrolet Impala to run on ammonia and drove it across Canada, only to face political roadblocks despite demonstrating the technology's viability.

The most promising immediate applications for ammonia aren't personal vehicles but industrial sectors—cement production, heavy equipment, garbage collection, and shipping. Projects like the UK's Leeds initiative, with offshore wind generators producing ammonia on-site to fuel barges, demonstrate practical integration with existing systems.

Beyond ammonia, Vezina’s team is pioneering photochemistry—using light instead of heat for chemical processes—which could revolutionise hydrocarbon refining without carbon emissions. This breakthrough would allow continued use of existing infrastructure while eliminating pollution, offering a pragmatic transition pathway.

Want to learn more about the future of clean energy? Visit hydrofuel.com and follow the developments being announced at the Canadian Hydrogen Conference. The energy revolution may not look exactly as we imagined—it might be powered by ammonia instead.
