天災や飢饉でさびれた京の都の荒れ果てた羅生門で、死人の髪の毛を一本一本抜いている老婆を見つけた下人が、生きるために老婆から着物を奪い取る「羅生門」。地獄に落ちた男が、蟻に慈悲を一度だけ見せたことがあるために垂れてきた救いの蜘蛛の糸を上るも、自分だけが助かりたいという身勝手さを出した途端にまた地獄に落ちる「蜘蛛の糸」。明治19年、鹿鳴館の舞踏会に初めて参加した名家の令嬢明子は、その美しさにより周囲の注目を一身に集める。やがて、フランスの海軍将校とワルツやマズルカを踊り、夜空を眺めながら語らう。明治の開化物の代表作「舞踏会」。他に、顎まで下がる長い鼻を気に病む高僧が、鼻を短くするために四苦八苦する可笑しみを描く「鼻」、仙人になりたいといって医者の家に長年住みこむ男を描いた「仙人」を収録。
