Acerca de esta escucha
'What is your name?' she asks, staring at me.'Jennifer Ross.' 'Jennifer Ross, Sister. Well, Nurse Ross, you are dressed in the uniform of a nurse from the Leeds General Infirmary. Such a uniform is not worn with a cardigan. Take it off at once.' 'Yes Sister.' I can feel my face turn red. A trainee nurse in the 1950s had a lot to bear.
In Jennifer Craig's enchanting memoir, we meet these warm-hearted yet naïve young girls as they get to grips with strict discipline, long hours and bodily fluids. But we also see the camaraderie that develops in evening study sessions, sneaked trips to the cinema, and mischievous escapades with the young trainee doctors. The harsh conditions prove too much for some girls, but the opportunity to help her patients in their time of need is too much of a pull for Jenny. As she commits to her vocation and knuckles down to her exams, she is determined that when she reaches the heights of Ward Sister herself she will not become the frightening matron that struck fear into her student heart.
Rich in period detail, and told with a good dose of Yorkshire humour, Yes Sister, No Sister is a life-affirming true story of a life long past.

Historia
‘A second’s silence and then an almighty scream. It was the most moving thing I had ever seen … A baby, a real live baby, another human life had entered the world. It didn’t seem possible and yet I had witnessed it with my very own eyes.’ Born into a happy working-class North London family in the mid-twentieth century, Katie is determined to ‘do something’ with her life. Working in the impoverished East End in the 1950s, she meets the Sisters of St John the Divine – a community of nuns dedicated to nursing and midwifery.

At the age of 22, Jennifer Worth left her comfortable home to move into a convent and become a midwife in postwar London’s East End slums. The colorful characters she met while delivering babies all over London - from the plucky, warm-hearted nuns with whom she lived to the woman with 24 children who couldn't speak English to the prostitutes and dockers of the city’s seedier side - illuminate a fascinating time in history.

Mary MacLeod's mother died in childbirth when Mary was five, an event that marked for the child a "before time" - a lost joyful time - and after. She was shunted from one relative to another while her father coped with his grief. He married again only nine months later, perhaps to have a mother for his child, but her new mum, harsh and withholding of her love, quickly exerted complete control over her thoughts and deeds, with her father oblivious.

Well hello to you dear audiobook browser. Now I have your attention it would be rude if I didn't tell you a little about my literary feast. So, here is the thing: is it just me or does anyone else find that adulthood offers no refuge from the unexpected horrors, peculiar lack of physical coordination and sometimes unexplained nudity, that accompanied childhood and adolescence? I am proud to say I have a wealth of awkward experiences - from school days to life as an office temp - and here I offer my 18-year-old self (and I hope you, too, dear listener) some much needed caution and guidance on how to navigate life's rocky path.

Midwife Kim Osterholzer ushers listeners behind the doors of Amish homes as she recounts her adventures answering God's call to the craft of midwifery. Kim chronicles her nine-year apprenticeship grappling with the nuances and idiosyncrasies of homebirth. She recounts the beauty and painstaking effort of those early years spent catching babies by the light of crackling woodstoves, oil lamps, and lanterns. Every birth enthralled her, whether it involved halting hemorrhages, sharing breath with tiny lungs, or bouncing through wild rides in ambulances.

Historia
Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

Interesting Story
Very interesting story to listen to. The author read her own book which was great for me because I think its fun to listen to memoirs in that person's own voice. She did not vary her intonation for the different people talking--which was alright--we just get used to other narrators doing that. I thought she did a great job in relating her experiences with the reader. I would recommend this book.

Must read for all nurses
I thoroughly enjoyed this journey back to the 1960's and the glimpse at life as a nurse. It is both numerous and sad.
It makes you realize just how many improvemei s there have been in medicine and that the nurse always is empathetic.

Jen you're my hero!!!
Why oh why did I start to listen to this audiobook? I was afraid of this. When the book ended, I began to cry. What am I going to do now? Who will tell me about life on the wards? How will I know what is going on in Canada with Jenny? I was so wrapped up in this great audiobook experience, I feel lost now that it is done. But thank you so much for one of the best audio books I have ever heard. I am still a district nurse but I feel more motivated and inspired to be a better nurse because of this story. Again, thank you so much Jennifer! Love, Peter VanNuis RPN (paraMed health services, Belleville Ontario Canada)

Fairly true to life
I went to a hospital based nursing school 45 years ago. These stories made me laugh because they are so similar to my own memories.... our school rules hadn't changed since the 50's so I can relate with Nurse Ross' experiences: the patients who make you think, the ones who challenge, the docs and med students, the friends who gather to unwind and de-stress. I truly resonated with the tough, hardened senior nurses (the "dragon" and the "sod") who made our student lives miserable. Our school director was truly a "nurse who ate her young" and often tried to dissuade us from continuing our careers (wouldn't she be surprised to know I went on to get a master's and have this for all these years).....
That being said, there really is no plot to this book, its a memoir in somewhat chronological order (I'm sure with the author's discretion), and the narration is flat and uninspired. Kudos to the author for trying, but a professional narrator would have been a better choice.
If you are a nurse who trained in the days before university nursing program (yes, we are the dinosaurs of the profession), then check this out.

I enjoyed it but it probably isn't for everyone
I was hesitant to try this audio book at first because I was worried that my Tennessee ears would have a hard time understanding a Yorkshire accent haha. Her Northern accent isn't too thick & I didn't have any trouble understanding Jennifer Craig. I found her voice comforting and easy to listen to.
The book details her training as a nurse in the 1950s in England and it might not be for everyone. It's a quiet book full of details about her duties in the hospital, & her fellow nurses-in-training.
If that sounds like something you'd enjoy (and I did) I wouldn't hesitate to give this a listen.

Great story
This was a very well told story. I really enjoyed the telling of how nurses were trained through the 50s. Her narrative was very interesting and fun to listen to.

Good story, but wrong reader
The story is interesting, however the writer who also reads the book is exactly that reading it!! It’s monotone and difficult to even follow. Would love to see another reader read it and at least change the tone for different characters. I felt like I was in the worlds most boring lecture. I think this is a book I might prefer reading to myself instead of audible format

Interesting
This book brought back memories for me. After my sister and I were out of the house, my mother went into nurses’ training. This was in the 1950s in Canada. Many things were similar between Craig’s training and my mother’s. I remember visiting my mother in the nursing residence and taking tours of the long wards. The uniforms were similar. Ongoing to the hospital today, I miss seeing the nurses in their white dresses and caps.
In the opening of the book, the author states she has taken liberty with the dialogue and some situations to make the book read more like a novel versus a memoir. She stated she did her best to keep the language and situations as they were in the 1950s.
The book is well written and brought back lots of memories. To me the 1950s do not seem that long ago but nursing and medicine have sure changed a lot. It also seems to me that good manners have also disappeared over the years. I enjoyed the book and will look for the other book written by the author entitled “Jab, Jenner and Juggernauts: A Look at Vaccinations”. Craig moved to Canada in the 1960s and went back to school. She obtained a BSN, MA and her Ph.D.
The book is just over nine hours long. Jennifer Craig did a good job narrating her book.

Interesting view of the life of nursing students in the 50s and 60s Britain
I think it would have been better performed by a younger performer, to catch the youthful vigor of the time, but it was enjoyable none the less. It got a little tedious at times when they started naming all the various instruments. ( Especially for non medical people) But none the less a good listen. Very informative.
