Eve O. Schaub
Acerca de esta escucha
In this book, Eve O. Schaub, humorist and stunt memoirist extraordinaire, tackles her most difficult challenge to date: garbage. Convincing her husband and two daughters to go along with her, Schaub attempts the seemingly impossible: living in the modern world without creating any trash at all—for an entire year and, as it turns out, during a pandemic.
In the process, Schaub learns some startling things: that modern recycling is broken and single stream recycling is a lie, that flushable wipes aren’t flushable and compostables aren’t compostable, and that plastic drives climate change, fosters racism, and is poisoning the environment and our bodies at alarming rates, as microplastics are being found everywhere, from the top of Mount Everest to the placenta of unborn babies.
If you’ve ever thought twice about that plastic straw in your drink, you’re gonna wanna listen to this book.

When the pandemic hit in 2020, flour and vegetable seeds flew off the shelves. But homesteader and entrepreneur Jill Winger believes these longings for sourdough bread and fresh veggies are more than a trend. As our society races toward progress, we’ve left something important behind. We are more connected than ever before, yet we’re still feeling unfulfilled. Fatal conveniences are the toxic products we routinely use and the unhealthy things we do that our culture and corporations have made us believe are safe and necessary for living well and efficiently. These things—from deodorant, cosmetics, dental floss, and sunscreen to laundry detergent, air fresheners, carpets, and crayons to candles, tea bags, cell phones, and chewing gum—are ubiquitous in daily life . . . and they are wreaking havoc on our health and our planet.

David R. Montgomery and Anne Bikle take us far beyond the well-worn adage to deliver a new truth: the roots of good health start on farms. What Your Food Ate marshals evidence from recent and forgotten science to illustrate how the health of the soil ripples through to that of crops, livestock, and ultimately us. Navigating discoveries and epiphanies about the world beneath our feet, they reveal why regenerative farming practices hold the key to healing sick soil and untapped potential for improving human health.

We all follow our own path in life. At least, that's what we're told. In reality, many of us either do what is expected of us, or follow the invisible but well-worn paths that lead to what is culturally acceptable. For some, those paths are fine - even great. But they leave some of us feeling disconnected from ourselves and what we really want. When that discomfort finally outweighs the fear of trying something new, we're ready to opt out.

Follow New York Times best-selling author Mary Roach - but be careful not to trip - as she weaves through personal anecdotes and everyday musings riddled with her uncanny wit and amazingly analytical eye. These essays, which found a well-deserved home within the pages of Reader's Digest as the column "My Planet," detail the inner workings of hypochondriacs, hoarders, and compulsive cheapskates. (Did we mention neurotic interior designers and professional list makers?) For Roach, humor is hidden in the most unlikely places, which means that nothing is off limits.

How do you define the good life? For many, success is measured not by health and happiness but by financial wealth. But such a worldview overlooks the important things in life: personal contentment, family time, spirituality, and the health of the planet and those living on it. A preoccupation with money and possessions is not only unhealthy, it can also drain the true joy from life. In recent years, millions have watched their American Dreams go up in smoke.

Historia
We prefer not to talk about it, but we should. Disease spread by waste kills more people worldwide every year than any other single cause of death. Even in America, nearly two million people have no access to an indoor toilet. Yet the subject remains unmentionable. Moving from the underground sewers of Paris, London, and New York (an infrastructure disaster waiting to happen) to an Indian slum where ten toilets are shared by 60,000 people, The Big Necessity breaks the silence, revealing everything that matters about how people do - and don't - deal with their own waste.

So much information
There is so much information and facts added into the years long story that it’s extremely easy to read and listen to. I think going back and finding what I need in the book for ideas to implement myself will be a bit hard though. Overall great presentation and content

Truly eye opening!
Everyone should read this book and single use plastics should probably be pretty much banned except where absolutely necessary, like medical uses. It’s frightening to think how microplastics are in our blood and all bodily fluids and by the year 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Recycling of plastics is largely a myth and burning plastics releases toxic chemicals into the atmosphere. I know personally I can buy less plastic and be more thoughtful on what I spend money on, but corporations like Coke and Pepsi need to do their part also.

scary and eye opening!
I went into this book naively thinking it would be about how to recycle better and limit my waste. Boy was I wrong! She gave all the nitty gritty details about all the different kinds of plastic, how hard it was for her throughout the year because there's so much garbage everywhere, and how basically nothing is actually recyclable. I had to listen in chunks because some information was too hard to listen to and fathom. Very informative and eye opening. She explores all avenues and covers all the topics. Loved the narrator. Although the information is hard to swallow, I am definitely recommending this book to others. The only way we can make change at the top (government, big corporations) is to start discussing the problem now and making changes because our world depends on it.
