Fangtastic

WOLFSONG is a uniquely crafted story that’s worth listening to. I’m not usually enticed by Fantasy, but this captivated me. It has enough twists, turns, shadows and colors to keep you immersed. When I finished listening, I wanted more.

I loved it all.

I cried. I laughed. This book is so beautiful. The family dynamic warmed my heart. ❤️❤️❤️.

TJ Klune does it again! What a story!

Was I reading a book or watching a movie unfold in front of my very eyes?

This book gave me big Twilight and Teen Wolf vibes! I will say that it did feel very long at times and I thought that it could have perhaps been 200 pages shorter.

I was really torn when rating this book because during some parts I would have “only” given it 3 stars and I’ve been debating reading the second book from this series. But I also thought that the storytelling just felt so right that it would be unfair for me to rate it any lower than 4 stars. Klune is the most talented author when it comes to character building in my opinion and this book was no exception.

LOVED the book and the narration!

The book was fantastic. The story was great and I was worried because I felt the pacing was too fast but honestly it wouldn’t have been right if we didn’t go across those many years. The maturity that the protagonist developed was obvious throughout and I was cheering for him throughout the story. The narrator was also a great voice actor. I hope the story continues and the narrator does the other books as well.

Instant classic

I love to the book, and love the second listen on audible. It’s such a great story, I love the representation, and the kind of read that makes you feel like you’re one of the pack. :-3 wruff!

Ive Never felt more human than reading about a pack of werewolves

Life changing story about family, growing into yourself, and the snake of life eating its own tail. Well done

A worthwhile listen, even with a slow second half.

There are lots and shapeshifting wolf stories out there, and I am comfortable saying that most of what I have read falls apart during the reading. Klune masterfully creates a wolf world that deals with things that other authors dance around - for instance, yes, they are naked when transitioning back from a wolf. There is an emphasis on seeing a pack as family that isn't new to this genre, but what makes this aspect of the book so successful is how the wolves interact both as wolves and in human form. The importance of scent, transferring scent, using scent to discern the emotions of those around them is very well done.

Let's talk narration. Graves is at the top of his game here. The broad range of characters he creates is impressive. I have listened to many titles with Graves as narrator, and he pulls out a few tricks I haven't heard before. There are two main characters who skew southern rather than western, but that could have been direction given, more than choice - I don't remember any story details saying why Ox's mother, or Gordo are so twangy. Short of a someone like JF Harding, there isn't anyone that I can think of who could have infused so much into this very long book. There are times when the story is a bit thin, and repetitive, Graves keeps everyone moving forward with his warm, even delivery that manages to fill in the gaps.

What Graves cannot do is fill in for some unfortunate plot direction as the story heads to its conclusion.

We meet 12 year old Ox at the beginning of the book as his father leaving. He father tells him he isn't good for much, isn't smart and people will give him shit for the rest of his life. Don't worry about remembering this. I think it is repeated so many times it is probably about 45 minutes of the nearly 19 hours of listening time. It is said over and over and over. At one point I think it is said two or three times in the same conversation. It looses impact over time. This is unfortunate as Joe's back story only grows more disturbing as new details emerge over the course of the book, Ox deserved to have had the same treatment. Especially as Klune chooses to tell this store solely from Ox's perspective. TBH, it serves the book well. However, when you only get one perspective, it would help if that perspective was rich and diversified. The reader knows from the synopsis that there is a three year separation after a terrible event. There needed to be a heavy handed editor employed from that point on. Sure, there is some action, and some really great elements happen here. But it goes old school format soap opera with Ox needing to tell everything over and over and over again. Completely unnecessary. The book isn't so long that we will forget what Ox's father told him in the first chapter.

The synopsis says after three years the boy is back, except now he's a man –– charming, handsome and haunted –– and Ox can no longer ignore the song that howls between them. Cool, but that isn't the book we're reading. I won't go into spoiler territory, just know that Ox holds grudges and thrives on anger. We could have reached the same conclusion without taking the meandering, petty, hypocritical path that Klune chose. Listen to that part all you want, there is nothing charming happening with Joe.

That said, the fist sixty percent of this book is really amazing. I enjoyed Ox's journey to adulthood, the peeling away of the onion like layers of the Bennett family, as well as Gordo. Ox's mother is a delight, and Joe's becomes more interesting as the book goes on. The wolf communication is beautifully crafted, and the concept of tethers is smartly used. Another noticeable difference is that the story has an MM romance that is written by a queer man. The intimacy has a realness that is so often missing in MM written by authors –– both women and men –– who are intent on writing hyper sexualized gay erotica that isn't believable. The set ups for the future novels isn't too intrusive to this story, which is greatly appreciated as I don't know that I will continue the series anytime soon, if at all. Being able to focus on this story alone is ideal.

When all is said and done, while I wish the storyline was tighter and less repetitive, this is a really enjoyable book that you can get lost in quite easily. Highly recommended.

Soap bubbles… and three years…

I listened to this and absorbed it like a sponge of emotion. I love TJ Klunes books (The Extraordinaries?) and I am writing this review after knowing and listening to the full series of the Green creek books. I love how well he has constructed this world and currently I am trying to listen to this for a third time. I just heard the title of chapter three and its title alone was a gut punch as that’s just how filled every chapter this book is. Everything has a meaning to it and is special in memory and means something. Gosh I should stop there so I avoid spoilers but if you are looking for a series with a continuation of the same perspective I am sorry to say that this series is not like that but other characters in this book. However I highly recommend it as this was the series that broke that wall for me and made it worth the read (listen). This book is about how Oxnard Matthasen grows into a wonderful person even if he is a bit confusing and in his head a lot. This book and series shows how growth can come from many roots and shed many leaves of many colors and shades.
