Another good Dallas

Unlike a number of reviewers, I throughly enjoy Susan Erickson's reading of the IN DEATH books. It may be because Net Library has the first 2 or 3 books in audio format read by someone else. No life in the characters with the other reader, could not tell Roarke was Irish, the intire reading was dull. Not so with Susan Erickson, especially with Eve..

Witness in Death stays with the In Death program. We learn more about the characters and get to solve a mystery. Like all formula books, the reader or listener knows what to expect, knows Eve, with Roarke and the others help, will catch the murderer and peace will reign until the next book. Works for me. I've read them all, now listening to them all and enjoying every moment.

This book was packed full of it all...mystery, love, laughter and suspense. One moment I am crying and then I am laughing.

Which scene was your favorite?

I loved the scene where Peabody and Dallas are in the car and Peabody is talking about McNabb naked! Made me laugh out loud!!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Susan Erickson captures all the sass and intrigue of Eve Dallas - I'm hooked.

What did you like best about this story?

I never knew what to expect from the case Eve was working on, and loved the Eve/Roarke story even more.

Have you listened to any of Susan Ericksen’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I listened to the first of the "in Death" series with Susan Erickson before reading the next 8 and returning to Audible for number 10.

Great story again

I feel so many emotions! I feel so for Eve! Having to go after someone she admires…someone she wishes she had for a Mother. Good job, Nora! The narrator is great!

Great story

Best book for me because there wasn’t the usual physical torture. I really get into these stories and don’t enjoy or so the need for the torture scenes. Also, less than half of the sex scenes. They’re not realistic and I feel they’re usually used as a filler. I enjoy the other characters and would like to see more of their life stories and less of Eve and Roark sec scenes.

Murder in Full Sight -- Excellent!

This is among my favorite Eve Dallas books. I particularly enjoyed the opening of the story, in which Eve and Roarke are attending the premier performance of "Witness for the Prosecution" in the New Globe Theater, constructed and owned by Roarke. The description of Eve's reactions to the play are quite wonderful. She has never seen the play or the movie, so her evaluations and reactions are based entirely on her experience as a police officer: she is sure from the beginning that Leonard Vole is guilty, that his wife is lying to save him, and that he's not worth the sacrifice she is making.

In the last scene, when Vole's wife stabs him, a real knife has been substituted for the stage prop so that the actor is really stabbed and dies on stage. Eve immediately takes charge of the situation, and the real murder investigation begins. From then on, Eve spends time trying to understand actors and their motivations, which provides a great deal of frustation for her and amusement for Roarke.

When the investigation gets into full swing, we get the full team at work together, which is one of the best parts of every In Death book. Peabody, earnest and ironic; McNab, jumpy and enthusiastic; Feeney, chewing his sugared almonds; Nadine, always searching for an exclusive interview; and all the other wonderful characters created by Robb. Throughout the story line, Eve is also gaining new insights into the ways that people interact and how to relate to them.

J.D. Robb writes such wonderful characters, and then does such a good job of developing the characters from one book to another, that the reader really becomes involved with the characters and cares about them and their welfare. I find it remarkable that she is able to produce two full-length In Death books each year, with an occasional short novel in-between, maintaining the quality of the writing and characterization throughout.

I am hopelessly hooked on this series. May J.D. Robb live long and write much more.

Good but Cruel

I love the In Death series but Eve's lack of empathy and compassion for others is really too much in this one. The way she revealed the secret to Carly was cruel. There's no other word for it and even with Nora trying to soften why she did it at the end couldn't make up for it. Eve would never be able to work in SVU because dumping your baggage on others and then feeling bad afterwords doesn't make up for your behavior.

I enjoy this series. Both her written and audio versions.

The narrator does an excellent transition from characters and emotions are portrayed well.

In which Eve is a hypocrite

... And overly cruel at the end. It's okay to hide her horrible past but okay to bludgeon another woman with the same kind of past?

Harassing and humiliating a rape victim to get a confession from the actual killer should have gotten Eve punched or fired or at the least no sympathetic ending.

Lots of points for the narrator though. Outstanding job as always.

What a twist at the end!

Would you listen to Witness in Death again? Why?

I would love to listen to this story again. The characters are very interesting and its a bit like Agatha Christie where just about everyone hated the victim and could have done it. However, Eve, with Rourke's help, digs deep and sifts through until she gets it.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved how Eve actually had empathy for her murderer. Of course her ignorance of theatre was pretty cute too.

Have you listened to any of Susan Ericksen’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes I have listened to many of them. I love them all so it's hard to compare. Susan does a great job!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I certainly laugh at times as the witty remarks, especially between Eve and Roarke and Eve and Peabody are just delightful. There were sad moments but not quite to the point of crying.

Any additional comments?

I thoroughly enjoy this series. The way each character has their own special bits e.g Feeney's nuts and of course Eve's pretense at being really hard when she's really quite soft is lovely. The relationship between Eve and Roarke is so special and I do not get bored with them, ever!
