The Orisha religion is a world religion just like Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, and Christianity. Archeologists have determined it has been practiced in West Africa since at least 500 BCE but is probably much older. During the transatlantic slave trade the Orisha religion spread to the Western Hemisphere. It was most heavily practiced in the Caribbean and Brazil. It is referred to as Isese (the tradition), Cuban Ifa, Lucumi, Santeria, Regla de Ocha, Brazilian candomblé, Umbanda or simply the Orisha religion. I have been studying comparative religion for over twenty years and the only religion I can compare Ifa to is Taoism. Both are indigenous wisdom traditions that existed before the rise of pantheon religions. Animism, ancestor veneration, and mediumship are the oldest religions and the Orisha faith contains all these elements. Over thousands of years a solid pantheon of Orishas developed into what we know today. The Orishas made it into Marvel comics! The god of thunder, Shango, made his first appearance in 1982 in “Thor Annual”. In 2020 Beyoncé released a musical film called “Black is King” produced and streaming on Disney. The film celebrates the diversity of African and African American culture and has explicit references to the Orishas, especially Oshun the goddess of love and motherhood. In Tomi Adeyemi's "Children of Blood and Bone," soon to be a full-length movie; the Orishas are a vital and integral part of the world's fabric, serving as the source of magic and spiritual power. This book explores the oracle of the Orishas and provides journal prompts and meditations on their teachings.
