December 1902. Een paar weken voor Kerstmis spoelt op het strand bij een kuuroord een schipbreukelinge aan. De jonge vrouw weet niet meer hoe ze heet, waar ze vandaan komt of wat er is gebeurd met het schip waar ze op zat. Haar enige bezit is de tak van een fruitboom die in haar kleren verstrikt is geraakt.
Johanna, dochter van de rijke familie die het kuuroord runt, is gefascineerd door de drenkelinge en de twee jonge vrouwen bouwen in korte tijd een hechte vriendschap op. Johanna is eenzaam en ongelukkig: haar familie probeert haar uit te huwelijken aan een man van wie ze niet houdt. Naarmate kerst nadert en iedereen zich op de voorbereidingen van het jaarlijkse Winterbal stort, nemen de twee vrouwen hun toevlucht tot een oud gebruik: ze zetten de tak van de fruitboom in een karaf water en wensen met heel hun hart dat hun grootste verlangen uit zal komen. Als de tak bloeit op kerstavond, zal het geluk hun eindelijk toelachen. Maar zal de winter-bloesem echt komen?
