Karl May: 25.2.1842 geboren in Hohenstein-Ernstthal, gestorben 30.3.1912 in Radebeul bei Dresden. Sohn eines armen Webers, war bis zum 5. Lebensjahr blind. Als junger Volksschullehrer wurde er wegen Diebstahls entlassen; er verbrachte im ganzen 7 1/2 Jahre wegen Eigentumsvergehen und Betrügereien aus finanzieller Notlage im Gefängnis. Erste schriftstellerische Arbeiten sind erzgebirgische Dorfgeschichten und Humoresken für Zeitschriften in Dresden, ferner Kolportageromane, die später gegen seinen Willen unter seinem Namen neu herausgebracht wurden und seinem Ruf sehr schadeten. Rasch bekannt wurde er durch seine Reiseerzählungen, die hauptsächlich unter den Indianerstämmen Nordamerikas oder im Nahen Orient spielen. Er wählte später die Ich-Form, wodurch der Anschein des Selbsterlebten hervorgerufen wird (Idealgestalt Old Shatterhand, Kara Ben Nemsi). Möglicherweise hat May schon früh die Reise nach orientalischen Ländern unternommen, kaum aber nach Nordamerika; später unternahm er mehrere Weltreisen.
