Set in 1838, Wilderness of the Heart follows Clara Lawson, a young woman in her early twenties who is determined to escape the life her parents have laid out for her. Refusing to marry a man she doesn’t love and feeling suffocated by the confines of her family farm in Hudson, New York, Clara joins a wagon train heading west in search of independence and a new life.
Clara’s journey is filled with emotional and physical challenges as she navigates the treacherous Oregon Trail. Along the way, she becomes part of the Bailey family, whose kindness and strength provide her with a sense of belonging. Clara encounters new companions, such as Andrew Callahan, a mysterious man who offers help but sparks her mistrust, leading to a tension that simmers throughout their journey.
The wagon train faces numerous dangers, from storms and bandit attacks to internal strife and heartbreak, as they press forward into the wild unknown. Clara’s strength and courage are tested, not just by the wilderness but by her internal struggle with what she’s left behind and the uncertainty of the future.
At its core, Wilderness of the Heart is a story of resilience, self-discovery, and the courage to defy expectations in pursuit of one’s true desires.
The novel explores themes of love, loss, and the transformative power of adventure on the road to a new life. Through friendships and hardships, Clara learns that the journey is not just about reaching a destination but about discovering who she truly is.
