Acerca de esta escucha

In the historical context of the Jim Crow South, Gail explores her mother's decision to pass, how she hid her secret even from her own husband, and the price she paid for choosing whiteness. Haunted by her mother's fear and shame, Gail embarks on a quest to uncover her mother's racial lineage, tracing her family back to 18th-century colonial Louisiana. In coming to terms with her decision to publicly out her mother, Gail changed how she looks at race and heritage.

With a foreword written by Kenyatta Berry, host of PBS's Genealogy Roadshow, this unique and fascinating story of coming to terms with oneself breaks down barriers. A Washington Post Notable Book of 2017's Most Inspiring Stories.

Interesting but Long

I really found this story interesting and timely. it's a direct response to all the ignorant people who ask why we don't forget about slavery. it proves that the Racial caste system lives on in this country even when we don't see it. My only issue is the length of this work. it was almost impossible to get through and repetitive.

Life Truth Matters

This book is a powerful and meaningful read. It sheds light on the experiences of many mixed raced and multicultural individuals. I learned so much and I am wiser because of the time I took to read this life-changing book.

Loved this book

I really liked this book. As a long-time family historian myself, with 1692 witches and murders in my family tree, I could appreciate Gail’s emotional highs and lows when it came to her findings. When climbing a family tree one never knows just what they will find.

Wonderful!

Such a incredible journey of self discovery, of race and racial passing to better oneself in a country where racial bias is so deep rooted. Very insightful and a must read.

A True Passing Story.

I truly enjoyed Gail's story. It was more than I expected. The back and forth between the present and past pieced everything together. Gail explained why her mother and others choose this path of passing. My favorite part of the story besides genealogy information was the reconnecting the family.

I cannot wait for the next book. Thank you for sharing.

Aspects Not Known

I certainly knew about passing, but there were so many aspects not considered. This book also points out the hypocrisy of racism. Great read!

Enlightening

Thank you for sharing your story. I only wish stories like this did not need to exist, that color was not a distinction used to belittle/enslave anyone. I do see that my view is very naive…. but maybe one day..

Good content

I am fascinated by DNA testing and ancestry. I have found some surprises in the research of my own family history and looked forward to reading about the author's discoveries. I will preface this by saying that I do not know what I would do or say if I learned that my mother held such a tremendous secret. The book was an adventure in history and an education in the lives of mixed race persons in Louisiana from the late 1700s through the 1900s. Statiscally, there was a large number of mulattos who abandoned their black roots and assimilated into the mainstream white world. The research and story telling was well done. I flinched a few times with the use of the n-word (unnecessary), by the author calling herself a "white negro", and by some unflattering details about her mother. Regarding the performance, I had to adjust to the narrator's voice -- it was a bit off-putting.

Eye opening !

As a mixed raced daughter I now see how my mother had to live her life. Growing up passing in a small town. Where at anytime something or someone could ruin her life. I can say both the author of this book and I feel the same. We will not hide who our ancestors are we can hold our heads high fight for the next generation.

Heard it

Disappointing, boring stuff, big let down. All dialogue and no story. No character development.
