Acerca de esta escucha

Meira Sokolow had the misfortune of being born to Jewish parents in Warsaw, Poland, in 1912. Before she took her first breath, her fate had been sealed.

Residing in the Jewish Quarter of the city, Meira's early life was typical. She fell in love with a local boy, got married, and had a daughter. Then the German army marched into Warsaw and everything changed. Forced into the ghetto with her family, she found survival to be a daily struggle. Hunger, disease, and unimaginable cruelty were her stark realities. When the ghetto was purged and she was sent to a concentration camp, Meira still had her family, and that was all that mattered. Then the camp was liquidated, and only a handful of survivors remained out of thousands. Meira Sokolow was one of them.

No longer a wife or mother, Meira emigrated to New York City. After World War II, the world wanted to move on and start a new chapter, but Meira couldn't turn the page so easily. She walked through her days alone, like a ghost with nothing to tether her to the earth. Then she met Max, a handsome American, who first mistook her for one of the boring socialites he encountered every day. He soon learned she was unlike anyone he had met before, seeing her strength and resilience, even when she couldn't. Max knew he could breathe life into her again, if only she would let him.

True Story Told Well

I felt like the story was told well and flowed in a way that made sense.

Amazing and so touching

This is one of the best books/audibles I have listened to. The reader did such an amazing job of making you feel the emotions of each character. I cried with the characters (literally), and laughed too. This story is so heartbreaking yet so touching all in one. I will never look at a butterfly the same. Such a wonderful tribute to her aunt and I would highly recommend it to anyone!!

Loved it!

So interesting and kept me on my toes. I am fairly critical of books but this was really entertaining. I learned a lot

This is one of the best stories I have ever read.

She didn't give a account of when she escaped..
But what she reported from that point is awesome.

Heartfelt read

I liked that the story went beyond what happened during the war. We got to see her life after the war. How life proceeded and how she found a way to be a voice for the voiceless and how it helped her as much as others. I liked the little debacle between the sisters over her 1st husband. I do believe her sister overreacted though. All in all a good story of family, the horrors of WW2, and moving on after tragedy the best you can. I had to get used the narrator's voice. At first it wasn't my favorite but I quickly got into and it was fine.

Moving

Loved Mira’s journey from loss to love, of ultimate healing, while still remembering and speaking out about the past.

The horrors of Naziism.

I enjoyed the history of the Holocaust, but the rest became too much of a soap opera

Started Strong w/a Weak Wrap Up

I wish I could give this book a five star rating, and I would have if the last few chapters weren’t so disappointing. The story begins as a gripping memoir. It was beautifully written in the first person narrative of a concentration camp survivor. It was so real and evoked many heavy emotions. While reading it, I felt like I had been transported to invaded Poland, and I too was hiding in the stairwell hidden away from nazi soldiers. It was THAT good. Then, about 3/4 into the book, the story changed into a sappy romance novel and was less and less interesting and no longer felt like a well-written memoir. It was such a drastic change, that I wouldn’t be surprised if the book were finished by a completely different author because the writing style changed. The book would have finished stronger WITHOUT all the fictionalized romance clouding what was a fantastic memoir. I literally forced myself to finish this because I felt that the romance was crap and unnecessary. If you’re like me and detest romance, then only read the first 3/4 of the book.
