Christopher Andrew
Acerca de esta escucha
Christopher Andrew and guests ask what would have happened if major historical moments had taken a different course.
In these 34 intriguing episodes, leading historian Christopher Andrew rewrites history, considering what might have transpired if pivotal events had turned out differently. By altering a single, plausible fact, he explores alternative futures where the Spanish Armada landed on English soil, Pontius Pilate freed Jesus, the Nazis occupied Britain and many more.
What if George Washington had lost the War of Independence? What if Columbus had never reached the New World? And what if Elizabeth I had married? In the company of an array of guest experts, Andrew tackles these and other questions, imagining a world where cars are banned from our cities, JFK survived the shooting in Dallas or the Great Fire of London never took place.
Full of thought-provoking hypotheses and lively speculation, this counterfactual history series not only suggests what could have happened, but refreshes our memories of what actually occurred during some of history's key turning points. In contemplating an alternate story, we are reminded how extraordinary it is that things did indeed result in the way that they did.
Episode list
- What if Hitler had won the war against Russia in 1941?
- What if John F Kennedy had survived the shooting in Dallas?

The year is 1901. Germany's navy is the second largest in the world; their army, the most powerful. But with the exception of a small piece of Africa and a few minor islands in the Pacific, Germany is without an empire. Kaiser Wilhelm II demands that the United States surrender its newly acquired territories: Guam, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Philippines. President McKinley indignantly refuses, so with the honor and economic future of the Reich at stake, the Kaiser launches an invasion of the United States, striking first on Long Island.

Here is a tour de force of American politics from one of journalism's most acclaimed commentators. History turns on a dime. A missed meeting, a different choice of words, and the outcome changes dramatically. Nowhere is this truer than in American politics, and in three dramatic narratives based on memoirs, histories, oral histories, fresh reporting with journalists and key participants, and Jeff Greenfield's own knowledge of the principal players, he shows just how extraordinary those changes would have been.

Historia
October 2023 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Yom Kippur War, a conflict that shaped the modern Middle East. The War was a trauma for Israel, a dangerous superpower showdown, and, following the oil embargo, a pivotal reordering of the global economic order. The Jewish State came shockingly close to defeat. After the war, Prime Minister Golda Meir resigned in disgrace, and a 9/11-style commission investigated the "debacle." But, argues Uri Kaufman, from the perspective of a half century, the War can be seen as a pivotal victory for Israel.

An epic of remarkable originality, Alone captures the heroism of World War II as movingly as any book in recent memory. Bringing to vivid life the world leaders, generals, and ordinary citizens who fought on both sides of the war, Michael Korda, the best-selling author of Clouds of Glory, chronicles the outbreak of hostilities, recalling as a prescient young boy the enveloping tension that defined pre-Blitz London, and then as a military historian the great events that would alter the course of the 20th century.

In this comprehensive examination of Nazi occultism, Stephen E. Flowers, Ph.D., offers a critical history and analysis of the occult and esoteric streams of thought active in the Third Reich and the growth of occult Nazism at work in movements today. Sharing the culmination of five decades of research into primary and secondary sources, many in the original German, Flowers looks at the symbolic, occult, scientific, and magical traditions that became the foundations from which the Nazi movement would grow.

The millions of people around the world who loved What If? still have questions, and those questions are getting stranger. Thank goodness xkcd creator Randall Munroe is here to help. Planning to ride a fire pole from the Moon back to Earth? The hardest part is sticking the landing. Hoping to cool the atmosphere by opening everyone’s freezer door at the same time? Maybe it’s time for a brief introduction to thermodynamics. Want to know what would happen if you rode a helicopter blade, made a lava lamp out of lava, or jumped on an erupting geyser? Okay, if you insist.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Intriguing Alternate Histories
Running from 1991 to 2004, BBC Radio 4's series What If has, at last, gotten something of an official release. This presentation of it, the 16 plus hour running time, isn't the complete series, frustratingly, but the 34 ventures into divergences from established history make for some intriguing listening. There are obvious ones like JFK not being assassinated or if Hitler, after victory during the Battle of Britain, had managed to invade Britain. There are also less obvious ones, from North Sea oil failing to give Britain a much-needed economic lifeline to 1970s referendums regarding Scottish independence and Britain entering the forerunner to the EU. Oddly given host Christopher Andrew's work in the field of intelligence, only one episode of the series deals with that topic. Yet Andrew, along with panels of experts assembled for each episode, offers insights and often plausible if (as in the case of the Martin Luther King Jr episode) overly optimistic, scenarios. All of which makes the 34 episodes presented here worth a listen for any history buff or budding alternate history writer.

Out of date
I love alternate history, fiction or nonfiction. However, the “What If” discussions in this book were recorded in something like 1992. The historical knowledge is 30 years old. Way out of date. For instance, the interviewer’s understanding of Native Americans (referred to as “Indians”) borders on insulting. I will look for something more recent.

An interesting snapshot of views a generation ago
These programmes discuss a wide range of historical counterfactuals. Criticisms of style and language used in the interviews are misplaced. Readers should appreciate context and mores at that time and not impose today’s politically correct terminology upon contributors who would not have known them, never mind accepted them.
The substance of the programmes remain relevant despite more recent attempts to write alternative histories.
Listen and enjoy

Boring, biased, and bizarre
Bunch of left-wing academics (oops, that was redundant) so detached from the concept of alternate history as to make this a complete waste of time. And some of their storylines are just odd. I got about a fourth of the way through before realizing I’d rather have my teeth pulled. I’ll go back to reading alternate history fiction, far more engaging in most cases.
