 Beryl Markham, the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic from east to west, describes her childhood on a farm in Kenya, her apprenticeship as a horse trainer, and her later career as a pioneer aviator who piloted passengers and supplies in a small plane to remote corners of Africa.

Of her memoir Ernest Hemingway said, "She has written so well, and marvelously well, that I was completely ashamed of myself as a writer....[She] can write rings around all of us who consider ourselves writers."

This book is a gem to be treasured and revisited, so completely and truly does it capture the essence of Africa and the people who lived in her during those magical years at the beginning of the 20th century.

A Time Recaptured

Markham's lyrical, well-wrought story of her African childhood, understanding of horses and the natural life of Africa, and passion for aviation and adventure deservedly received Hemingway's choice praise. The narrator flawlessly captured the many voices of the characters without sentimentality and with perfect pacing. This was such an engrossing listen it was hard to hit the pause button.

An amazing memoir of an amazing life. Beryl lived in a time where everyone was judged by the cover of their book. She is that and so much more.
