Jeder Mensch hat einen gesellschaftlichen Wert, der täglich steigen oder fallen kann. Und jeder hat nur 72 Stunden Zeit, um im Notfall das Schlimmste zu verhindern.
Amalia Thomson lebt in einer Welt ohne Grenzen, dafür jedoch der ständigen Überwachung. Mit drei Jobs auf drei Kontinenten verstreut, versucht sie, ihren sozialen Wert hoch genug zu halten, um sich und ihre kranke Mutter über die Runden zu bringen. Denn Geld existiert in Amalias Realität nicht mehr. Der Social Value des Menschen ist die neue Währung, die Gerechtigkeit und Frieden für alle verspricht. Wer für die Gesellschaft jedoch "wertlos" wird, oder gegen die Regeln verstößt, muss seinen Platz auf der Erde räumen. Wer noch brauchbar ist, landet hingegen im Human Recycling Center und wird als Keeper der Neuen Welt zur Marionette der Regierung ausgebildet.
Amalias trister Alltag wird schon bald durch eine zufällige Begegnung mit der Vergangenheit völlig auf den Kopf gestellt. Die Gegenwart führt sie zu der Liebe ihres Lebens, doch das Schicksal hat andere Pläne mit ihrer Zukunft. Ihr liebster Mensch wird plötzlich wertlos, während ihr Wert sich rasant verhundertfacht. Aber das hat seinen Preis, und Amalia ist nicht bereit, den zu zahlen.
