Acerca de esta escucha

In Voicemails from My Sister, author Kate Russell explores her sister Sibby's bipolar schizoaffective disorder through true stories that illustrate the disease and how medication both helped and hindered its progress. From her mother's drug use during pregnancy, which led to an incomplete diagnosis, to Sibby's current mental status, as a 37-year-old ward of the state, Kate breaks down her sister's disease by highlighting events that contributed to the uprise and decline of her well-being. Both heartbreaking and hilarious, Kate recounts true tales of her sister over the years, painting a picture of a unique, lovable victim of circumstance. Touching on their parents addiction, narcissism, and neglect, Kate illuminates how their family's denial and unwillingness contributed to Sibby's disorder. A must-listen for anyone with a history of mental illness in their family, this quick listen will have you laughing one minute and crying the next. Ultimately, you will fall in love with Sibby and be left rooting for her healthy recovery.

Wow

I can actually say this book has a wow factor that truly left me shaken. The book is well written and honestly there are parts that will break your heart when it comes to Kate's and Sibby's parents and how they deal or lack of dealing with their children. Mental Health is mo joke and thus book brings out the realness of what siblings and families deal with. This books packs a punch so deep within my heart that it broke for both ladies. If you are looking for true stories about real mental illness I highly recommend this book to you. This is my honest unbiased review that I am voluntarily leaving of my own volition. Phenomenal book give it a listen.

Well written and witty

Although the author is navigating Trauma and mental health I felt like these short stories were told in an authentic yet playful way. You would not believe the stories if you didn't know they were true and that's exactly what life is life with someone who has a mental illness. Highly recommend

GREAT READ!

I enjoyed it! The narration was great and kept me entertained. My heart literally breaks for the innocent children and I am overjoyed when they succeed in spite of their negligence. The author did a good job with telling this story of her sister! I am hoping to see what a follow up book will reveal! I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Another harrowing trip down the rabbit hole!

Russell's childhood and a good part of her adult life hasn't exactly been the stuff of Norman Rockwell paintings. Substance abuse, Alcoholism, violence, poor choices, and ignorance are just SOME of the things her parents suffered from...and as result, so did Kate and her younger sister. That she lived to tell the tale in this and her first book is nothing short of miraculous.
Lest you think that the whole thing is a downer, Russell sprinkles some humourous anecdotes throughout. Perhaps it's the dark gallows humor of a survivor, but there are clearly lighter moments.
I highly recommend this book for anyone living with addiction either personally or with loved ones.

Touching

This being the second book I have listened to from this author and I could not stop listening. I work with this population of adults in the mental health community and my heart went out to Kate and her sister. This was well written and performed. I felt, again, like I was talking to Kate and listening to the love she has for her sister balanced with managing her own trauma and emotional concerns. Such a great book.
