Robert Sheckley
Acerca de esta escucha
From the very beginning of his career, Robert Sheckley was recognized by fans, reviewers, and fellow authors as a master storyteller and the wittiest satirist working in the science fiction field. E-Reads is proud to re-publish his acclaimed body of work, with nearly 30 volumes of full-length fiction and short story collections, all with striking new covers. Rediscover - or discover for the first time - a master of science fiction who, according to the New York Times, was "a precursor to Douglas Adams".
In 2092, the world's ecology is in ruins, drought and famine are widespread and survival is a never-ending challenge. Harold Erdman leaves his dying community with one goal, to make his way to Esmeralda, an island paradise run by the Huntworld Corporation which has turned public murder, among willing competitors, into a thriving and lucrative business. Can he survive the journey and then the many rounds of deadly competition on his way to the Big Payoff. His neighbors lives, as well as his own, hang in the balance. Hilarious, savagely funny, and imaginative - this is Sheckley at his best!

It's the 21st Century and the ugliness of war no longer exists, except on a very personal level. There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Historia
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

Historia
Two pirates do battle on an old junk ship in Singapore Harbor. They leap nimbly from deck to rigging, crossing swords like fencing masters. And then one surprises the other, slicing a rope and sending the unfortunate pirate tumbling into the bay. This is how stuntman Angelo Sacchetti dies. Edward Cauthorne was his opponent, a fellow stuntman whose career died along with Sacchetti. He’s selling used cars when two thugs approach him.

Perfect Followup to "The 10th Victim"
Any additional comments?
This is book #2 in Robert Sheckley's "Victim" series.
But although it IS the second book in a series, it is written in such a way that a reader could hypothetically jump into this novel before reading "The 10th Victim" and not be the least bit confused.
The "Victim" trilogy only shares a common premise, not a common protagonist.
That being said, this installment of the series is just as solid as the first book.
My ONLY complaint is that "Victim Prime" lacks a bit of the humor found in the first book. Just like all of Sheckley's other works, there IS a constant tongue-in-cheek feel to the narration and dialogue in "Victim Prime", but it is not as readily apparent as the rest of the trilogy.
All in all, this is an outstanding listen, and the narration performance is top notch.
