A Gotrek Gurnisson Audiobook

Greywater Fastness – an industrial canker in the heart of Ghyran. Foundries and metalworks pump soot and fire endlessly into the skies of the Realm of Life. Dusty streets hide peril at every turn, and attacks by the Dreadwood Sylvaneth hamper the city’s relentless encroachment.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

Gotrek takes on some of his earliest enemies again – the scheming skaven! It may be a different time, and a different world, but the legendary Slayer hasn't lost his knack for dealing with vermin.

THE STORY

Gotrek Gurnisson barges into Greywater Fastness seeking answers as to why his Fyreslayer rune is mysteriously waning. But finding them in the stronghold's clogged and blackened arteries may prove far more difficult than first thought, and with skaven warlocks building something deep underground – something that will cement their place in skavendom forever – Gotrek begins to wonder if he might instead find that which has eluded him these past ages – his doom.

Keeble Gives a Fantastic Performance, the Story, Not So Much

First here's what I liked about the book, Jonathan Keeble gave a fantastic performance as always, the audio books would never be the same without him. The parts from the Skaven perspective were enjoyable and I looked forward to hearing about their dastardly schemes every time they came up, as a light spoiler the cannon barrage was awesome to listen to. I also found the concept for the final antagonist particularly cool and interesting, though it is tainted by, in my opinion, a very unearned death for such a cool character. Now onto the rest. Gotrek is a side character in his book, many other reviewers and I all seem to agree on this. The protagonist, I believe it's spelled Elsworn (I couldn't find it online or in the description so I'm just trying to sound it out), doesn't have good chemistry with Gotrek. The co-protagonists of the series that best worked with Gotrek were the ones who complimented his personality and skills, Felix was at the end of the day just a man, the contrast between him and Gotrek made for great moments and put the threats they faced into perspective. At first I wasn't crazy about Maleneth but as Realmslayer progressed I found myself quite enjoying her banter with Gotrek, she complimented him well without outshining him and seeing their relationship develop throughout the books was enjoyable. I did not even get a fraction of that with Elsworn. It is not a stretch to say she has a more developed relationship with her horse than she does with Gotrek. Even looking past that fact I found her uninteresting, and at times quite grating, she never really has any moments of doubt or uncertainty, she's heroic, brave, and capable with little to no flaws. The moments of doubt that she might occasionally feel when facing down some of the worst the Mortal Realms have to offer are fleeting at best. She feels like a cardboard cutout of a hero. Gotrek also plays second fiddle in almost every fight, including the final duel. I desperately hope that the series gives Gotrek a companion who fights along side him, not one that outshines him in every way. I'm not asking for Felix as many people are, I just want to be able to enjoy one of my favorite series like I once did, because if things don't change I can't see myself going on. Please give Gotrek, and the many people who love his character, the respect they deserve and make him the focus of his own books.

A good book, but I think black library doesn’t really know what to do with Gotrek any more or the very least at the moment.

As someone who came in to this characters books much later than most other people, but since finding them has literally devoured every single novel that I can get my hands on that has an audible version since I am blind, this one falls near the bottom of the pile for me, unfortunately still an absolutely great book but when you have an entire series of in my opinion, absolutely great or amazing books. It’s really really easy to tell when the quality dips, I do not think it is the author‘s fault read many of his other books, and he is a good writer, especially for black library, the main issues I have with this book is it seems like we are back to the same old thing yet again with everyone’s favorite slayer… I thought we were making progress when soul slayer came out… And for those who haven’t read, I won’t spoil any of the book, but it had some surprising things happen some that I personally do not like and I’m actually still aggravated about, then we get light slayer… This is also in my opinion one of the lower end books in the series, the new companion was not compelling and our good friend Gotrek seems to have regressed quite a bit since the last book in my opinion, as far as personality goes,. I guess I just feel like they need to quit coming up with just random encounters. And actually do more with his overarching story… I mean, if you go all the way back to Caven slayer it led into Demon slayer which led into dragon slayer so on and so forth, and while they were different each time they still kind of felt connected, I felt like the new Age of Sigma books had that going for them up until soul slayer and then it feels like they’ve dropped the story again because they’re not sure what they want to do or where they’re going with it and it’s just getting frustrating especially since this is one of my all-time favorite fantasy characters. Also felt like. Gotrek was far far weaker than he has been in a while in a novel and honestly very little to no explanation, as of why there are some tidbits in the story that I don’t wanna spoil on review, that could be a clue, but it was just not enough to explain it in my opinion. like I said still a good book because well it has our favorite slayer in it, but I’m hoping the next one can really pick up the story and the quality a bit because if this keeps up, then I may actually have to just pretend that the books ended at a certain point because I am definitely not happy with the direction they are taking these current novels.

New character feat. gotrek

this was a pretty fun story if it wasn't told in the "gotrek" series. this played out as someone's fan fiction insert character feat gotrek written like the old skavenslayer novel. 95 percent new character 5 percent gotrek just sorta there. overall decent but man if it isn't the manling I don't want to hear 95 percent of the story of a new character explaining herself and absolutely nothing to do with gotrek

super fun

Great story that followed the Gotrek tradion of being fun, introducing a group of well written and stylized villains, without being repetitive. Very entertaining.

Good to see the Skaven at it again

Puts me in mind of Skavenslayer with how our main character goes on through his world travels and making new friendships along the way.

Best in the AoS Gotrek series for me.

Gotrek seems to finally have found a companion he likes and I enjoy seeing them banter. The skaven are funny as ever. I’m looking forward to more Gotrek.

Good story

The story was on par with most Gotrek books. Jonathan does a 10/10 job as well. But it feels like they took all the progress or hints as to what’s going to happen in the last book and just threw them out the window which is disappointing.

Excellent narrator

To keep it short, Gotrek felt like a side character. While the novels have never been told from his POV he was always a driving force. Here, he feels like a secondary character rather than a protagonist.
The new human isn't terrible, but her practical dispatch of the final villain felt rushed and unearned.
This is a fine story for what it is, but it continues to feel like no one really knows what to do with Gotrek in the Mortal Realms. Bring back the elf, or Felix or let Gotrek Gurnison finally find his doom.

Interesting but directionless

I liked the book and I of course like Gotrek but man the authors of these books need to figure out what the plan is with Gotrek and where his story goes and what the end goal is. It feels like the authors originally had a much bigger plan for Gotrek with him possibly slowly ascending to godhood or at least demigod status and getting more involved with the worlds of age of sigmar in a grander scheme but slowly over the last two books the plot has derailed and it’s gone off the tracks which can be seen in this book. Now the story is very interesting and more time with the skaven is always great but man this book feels like it needed two or three more hours of plot to explain a lot of what they left up in the air and to give us readers a satisfying ending in the end it all felt really rushed and the ending was anticlimactic. Either the authors need to decided on a single companion to give Gotrek instead of this now rotating door of companions or listen to the fans and finally bring back Felix because while some of these companions work well with Gotrek it’s just not the same without Felix.
